Servin' up Sunday Lunch (and Kindness) at GLIDE

Join BRIDGEMEN as we dish up some hot lovin' to folks that can really use it.

We're building a bridge to the Tenderloin and serving Sunday lunch to between 500 and 1,500 homeless and hungry folks at GLIDE. As kitchen and waitstaff we will greet clients, pass out trays of food, visit with diners as we bus tables and maybe even scrub some pans.

Most importantly, we’ll serve as a friendly and warm presence for people looking for a hot meal and smile.

GLIDE has been a pioneer in supporting the LGBT community for decades (the lead pastor is a lovely lesbian). They're a church, but the kitchen and dining room are separate from the sanctuary and funded to be a "radically inclusive" and non-sectarian refuge for all marginalized people.

After our 3-hour shift we will head two blocks down Taylor Street to the fabulous Aunt Charlie's Lounge for a quick snack and maybe even a Sunday afternoon beverage. We hope you can come serve!

Sunday, April 7 | 11:00am to 2:00pm

665 meals served. (590 in the main hall, 75 in the cafe).

It was very meaningful *and* fun day! I especially appreciated the 100% turnout on a Sunday morning. It was great to work with and hangout with veteran volunteers and very charming newbies! GLIDE was wonderful and giving a little business to both Aunt Charlie's and the Gangway was cool. (So was the angry drag queen!) Last, but not least...
SPECIAL SHOUT-OUTS NICK-- for his thoughtful words to start our day. ANTONIO-- for being a trooper and volunteering on both Saturday *and* Sunday.

JOHN-- for reminding us of James Brown by being "The Hardest Working Man in GLIDE Business". BRANDON-- for being our Troop Leader through the wilds of the Tenderloin. ALL OF Y'ALL- FOR being 100% punctual on a Sunday morning, FOR working hard and being jolly fun to hang with...and finally...FOR voting to skip the volunteer lunch.

It was very rewarding to help organize the day. Thanks for the privilege guys! -Jay :)

I had a great time! Well, except for the having to wear pants (I WAS MISLED! haha) Might this become a regular Bridgemen thing to do, perhaps monthly or quarterly?

I was thinking the same thing about doing this on a regular basis. For me, once a quarter or every other month would be great. Whad'y'all thinx?

The more positive Meetup comments, the more likely we are to repeat an event. GLIDE treated us very well and were nicely organized. I will likely suggest that we make GLIDE a regular stop. We'll see how it may fit in the mix and the calendar. Thanks John. It was very nice to see you again. -Jay :)

I was blown away by the people who came to eat; so much need, yet they were happy and grateful. I'm always amazed at people's resilience!

Good Morning Bridgemen! Report from South Beach: the Giants crowd is filtering in, so transit may be a little busy. Meters start at noon btw. I so want to wear shorts (which actually are allowed) but I'll be in roll-up-able jeans. C u in 45 mins! :)

    Hi guys.
We have a little glitch with Meetup email right now. I do have three of your direct email addresses. If so, you will get one "IMPORTANT INFO on GLIDE" message from me tonight. Those people are:
    Benjamin B.
    Michael W.
    Nick S.

The other 12 of y'all will get TWO email messages with logistical info via Meetup. I should be able to get them all out by tomorrow morning. Please make sure to reference both emails. My contact info will be in them. Please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

We're sorry about the bother guys. Thanks! Jay :)

Karen Oliveto, the lead pastor at GLIDE led the very large People of Faith contingent in the Freedom to Marry march from the Castro to City Hall earlier tonight. She spoke very powerfully at the rally and helped lead us in a moving chorus of We Shall Overcome while more than 1,000 of us grasped each others hands. I'm not a member of her particular faith, but I think she really is a great asset to our community and one lovely lesbian indeed.
