THE NEXT BOOK (October 17th, 2013, 7PM): "Coming Apart:..." by Charles Murray

Well, 9 people of 150 members have spoken...our next book is "Coming Apart: The State of White America" by Charles Murray. Thinking back to my college discussions of "The Bell Curve", we're in for a lively discussion. We need to decide a date for this book. Please post your thoughts on how long we need to read this book and if we should have a mid-way meet-up to just kind of hang out. I'm going to tentatively set the location as Beer at 1410 SE Stark St, Portland, OR 97214. They have a nice back room which should accommodate us.

I would like to suggest "The Trap" by Daniel Brook for the next book. :)

Although I didn't finish the book, I'm glad I attended. I loved listening to everyone's thoughts and opinions. Plus it was good to meet everyone! Until next time...

35 pages in and expecting the author to say 'Back in my day, we didn't have all these new fangled gadgets, and we LIKE IT that way!!!'. You damn kids! Get off my lawn!

Depending on how the discussion goes...maybe we should follow Charles Murray with Joan Walsh's "What's the Matter with With People"

11/7 is super far out. I think this Meetup should definitely be in October. Sundays at 8 was our usual meeting time in bygone eras. If we could start that up again it'd be great. Re: Charles Murray. He's definitely a controversial guy. I find what he says pretty fascinating from a lot of different angles (I was a social justice activist in college, and I tend to read a lot about the topics he talks about, like genetics and class). We just need to set some ground rules, be mindful, and I think it'll result in an interesting discussion.

This is the day before I drive of to San Francisco for the weekend to attend Startup School, so there's a slight possibility I might not be able to make it depending on how much time I have. I plan on making it, but just a heads up.

My degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice has led to an avid interest in the soical and political spects of crime, terrorism, political corruption and white collar crimes. Ofourse, I also enjoy mysteries of all genres, especially those related to craft-orientations.

I tentatively set the date for the 17th of October which give us about a month to read this book. If any big objections, please let me know...

Is November 7th too far out?

Seems alright to me. Although, we should probably have some sort of social mid-way meet up for good measure. What do you think?

Either way's good. I was just throwing a date out there to get the discussion going. :)

This guy wrote that nasty "Bell Curve" book! After reading a review and a short description; I'm not sure if I can stomach such ridiculous delusions, but I'll give it a try.
I'm not judging a book by its author; I take issue with his ridiculous premise that there ever was a dominant culture/singular mindset in America. It's a myth which has always been utilized to subjugate.
