Next to Normal - Musical Production at the Empty Space Theatre

Next to Normal is a rock musical with book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt. Its story concerns a mother who struggles with worsening bipolar disorder, specifically bipolar I disorder with psychotic features, and the effect that her illness has on her family. The musical also addresses such issues as grieving a loss, suicide, drug abuse, ethics in modern psychiatry, and suburban life.

The musical opened on Broadway in April 2009. It was nominated for eleven 2009 Tony Awards and won three, Best Original Score, Best Orchestration and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Alice Ripley. It also won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, becoming just the eighth musical in history to receive the honor.

This local musical production is sponsored by NAMI of Kern County. We have reserved a block of at least 10 seats, suggested donation of $15 to be paid at the door.

Just a terrific musical, and Cyndy had all the supposed attendees' pix on her smart phone so she recognized me, and we sat side by side and then were able to chat in the lobby during the internal. I wouldn't have gone but for the Meetup, so for me it was personally satisfying. There was no post-theater discussion because the place had to be cleared for a "Rocky Horror" event.

It was a wonderful play. It was nice to meet George and have someone from our meet up group to sit with. I looked for others from our group, but did not see anyone else. Sorry if you were there I missed you.

Hey everyone - I hate to do this, but I need to stay in tonight. I have a chronic health condition that has gotten worse as the day goes on. When you get to the Empty Space Theatre, ask for Julie or Kimberly...they know you are coming and have reserved seats for you...next time...

Let's meet in the Empty Space Theatre by 7:45 at the latest. Every seat has been taken at performances to date, and you relinquish your reserved spot if you are not in it within 10 minutes of show time. Call or text me at[masked] if needed. All reports are that this is a fantastic performance.

Yes, they are holding a block of 10 tickets for us. Also, there will be a discussion afterwards for anyone who wants to talk about the themes of the play.
