This group came about because I love baking but when I had a baby I found I didn't have the time to dedicate to trying things as she was never asleep long enough, or I'd be afraid of getting stuck at a crucial burning moment.
The concept behind this group is for mums/dads/carers of babies and toddlers to meet up during a weekday to bake while still, mostly, having the kids around (though you are welcome to attend without them!). There will be times when your child needs you, so we take it it turns to bake sections of the recipe and someone is always available to swap out. Don't worry if you get stuck and don't get to bake, it's meant to be a social event too and we all get to share in the final product (and share in the tidying up)!
For the older children (around 18 months - 4 years) we have a kids' corner as well so they can do their own baking. If you are a member and have a friend or grandparent who would like to come along too, that's fine with us (More adults than children is always a plus!). The group is made up of all different people with different personalities and different aged kids. The venue is usually my house which has lots of parking, baby-friendly and with plenty of space for the kids to run around.
Sessions are usually run on a Monday, Thursday or Friday morning with ad hoc Saturday sessions (I may start doing Tues/Wed sessions as we head into the summer). Feel free to bring lunch with you if a session runs close to or over lunch time. We are based in Hinchley Wood, Esher.
If you are happy to host at yours please volunteer! We unfortunately need to limit sessions to 4-6 people depending on location (usually 6 if at mine) as otherwise we run out of space but if there are enough people on a waiting list, we will run it again for those who missed out. Sessions with fewer than 4 people signed up are likely to be cancelled/rescheduled for practicality issues.
So far we've done Macarons, swiss rolls, rainbow cakes, millionaire shortbread, cakepops, batternburg cake, cupcakes, marzipan, fudge and so much more. We're happy to repeat these if there is enough interest. Cost of ingredients and energy is shared amongst those who come along, at usually £4 per adult, but bought by the host initially to ensure we have everything we need. Kids' Corner costs £3 per child. You tell us in your RSVP if your child might want to bake so we have enough ingredients.
It is important that any children present at a Meetup are supervised and accompanied by a parent or guardian. Members who are inactive (not visiting the page) for a year will be automatically removed but are welcome to rejoin at any time.
