Character and Costume Creation

Let's meet outside the restaurant at 4:30 p.m. The Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse is across the street, so anyone attending the Serenity event will have time to join us if they wish to.

The idea is to brainstorm ideas for characters or costumes and to help each other come up with ideas on how to put a finished Steampunk persona together. (Note: this is not the same as cosplay where you pick an existing character and mimic it. I'm talking about your own persona --  explorer, mad scientist, etc.)

I'm bringing an art pad, pencils/pens, and a couple of books: Steampunk Your Wardrobe and Fantasy Fashion Art Studio

Please bring drawing materials (or tablet, if you prefer) for jotting down ideas. Also, if you see any photos in catalogs of clothing ideas, bring those as well. Butterick, Simplicity, and McCalls patterns sometimes are good idea starters, whether or not you sew.

Lost Dog is a fine spot. Food is good too.

Brie and I were late and missed Kevin and Nicole. Fun lunch spot though, we enjoyed the great selection of Bieres.

I'm outside the lost dog cafe but I don't see anyone. I'll give it maybe twenty minutes before I leave.

Afraid we can't make this one, but do keep us "in the loop" if y'all (re)schedule another session of this sort...

I'll be there as well but with like 10 friends-they are also sci-fi fans :) So excited to see everyone.

Hey guys, I won't be able to make it on Saturday. I have had several appliances go south on me and my car is leaking. I'll be spending all week getting things fixed. First the dryer, now the hot water heater and washing machine. It's a regular appliance strike at my house. There's no reason you can't meetup without me, so I'll keep this event as scheduled and probably organize another costume-themed meetup for the fall.

Karen asked me to post a link to the Can't Stop the Serenity information as a possible location - it's at the Arlington Cinema Drafthouse on Saturday July 19 - and there are places nearby for discussion after. Lost Dog Cafe is across the street.

    Here's the Serenity info:

I think I can make this one. I do enjoy coming up with concepts, even if my craft is a bit lacking.

Maybe we should change the venue to the Serenity charity screening and hang out afterward to play with costume ideas.

I am all for everyone coming to the Serenity event - I'll gladly post info on it on a different thread! And there are plenty of places around the theater to meet up after. I can't guarantee Ken, Tracy or I would be able to meet up only because we're all three organizers through another meetup.

Well, there's no one time or day that will work for everyone. I'm envisioning the character/costume creation as an ongoing process that we might do several times a year.

Is there anyway we could slide this to Sunday, the 20th? I'd be glad to help find a location if someone could give me a general vicinity. La Madeleine in Alexandria has been willing to put tables together for one of the groups I'm in.

So, any ideas on places to meet? Are we going to want outlets in case anyone brings a computer, or is pencil and paper (and maybe magazine clippings) the way to go?

I'm happy to write some stuff in the forums for my thoughts, but I will be en route from England to Argentina on the 19th. Have a great time!

I figure we can do another session maybe in the fall or winter? It's a good indoor event for the crappy weather season. :) (Also great for the hot weather season!)

The date is tentative, but I thought it might be fun to do a low-key summer thing. And yes, we should find an air-conditioned hot weather hideout! There's no reason this has to be a one-time session.

I definitely would love to do it on another day too!

This is the same day as Can't Stop the Serenity - a charity screening of Serenity (and Dr. Horrible) at the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse, which is put on every year by the Sci Fi Outpost (the other meetup group I hang out with). I'm booked all day long as one of the organizers (the emcee's lovely assistant, specifically, and if I have time to throw together a steampunk Kaylee outfit, I will).

Nicole, Send me an email and I'll tell you all about it! It's awesome and for charity too.

Unfortunately I won't be able to attend on that date as our softball tournament begins that weekend. If it ends up some time on a Sunday afternoon, I will definitely be there.

This is a really clever idea! While character and costume creation may be old hat to you all, it never crossed my mind to intentionally think out who I am within the steampunk aetherverse with the resulting form follows function impacts.

In Harry Potter-dom, I've often wondered about the daily life of an ordinary wizard my age when the magical world wasn't being threatened by dark forces, and this is similarly stretching my brain.

    Thx!
