"Do not feed the trolls" and its abbreviation DNFTT redirects here. For the Wikipedia essay, see Wikipedia:What is a troll?
An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial and usually irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the intention of baiting other users into an emotional response[1] or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion

WE've had our fair share of trolls in Beltway Atheists...3 of them as a matter of fact (I would be happy to share with you the names of the 3 trolls off-line if you're curious...the 3 have become affectionately known as the King of the trolls, The court Jester, and the Town drunk)

I see numerous references on various boards that I am on, and am not sure if there is a real meaning to it, or if it is juts a generalized insult, like 'fascist'.  Can someone enlighten me?
This is not sarcasm: apart from in nursery rhymes, I do not understand the meaning of the word.
