RE: [atheists-55] GBAC people

Since September, I have been attending meetings of a humanist group called the Baltimore Ethical Society (BES). I thought that some people who have considered UU or tried it but didn't feel like it fit them quite right might be interested in this.

First, the people are very nice and welcoming of new folks. BES calls itself a religious group, but opinions on whether that is an appropriate label are mixed. Meetings are on Sunday mornings and they sort of mimic the feel of a religious service. The group is non-theistic, and most members are agnostics or atheists. There is never any mention of anything spiritual or supernatural, unlike some UU churches. I consider myself a firm atheist, and I have obviously found it to be a good fit for me.

Their website is www.BaltimoreEthicalSociety.org<http://www.baltim...;, and everyone feel free to send me an e-mail if you have any questions. **(But instead of hitting "Reply," put my address, [address removed]<mailto:[address removed]>, in the "To" field so it doesn't go to everyone.)

Yes, I had the same impression based on various UU websites! It seemed to me that it was still a place for people who believed in a diety or "spirit" or souls, not necessarily for someone like me who refers to herself as a "devout atheist." ;)

But I think individual UU churches vary greatly and the Towson UUC seems to be dominated by atheists. As a matter of fact, my friends said the new minister said when she first arrived there, "God" was practically a bad word! The minister prefers to be open & inclusive of those who believe in a diety, while also examining various teachings from world religions.

I've attended a few social events, but only one Sunday morning 'service' thus far & it focused on volunteerism. Minimal "spirit" stuff.

Also does anyone do any sort of regular volunteer work? I used to do "Pets on Wheels" - taking my dogs visiting at a nursing home, but one of the visitors spooked my male schnauzer & I can't get him chill out again there, so I had to stop. :( I'm looking for something else I could do perhaps once a month or so. & I'd like to involve my son & husband - especially at the holiday season so giving back is part of our own "Krismas" traditions.

A Sunday morning meet up would work for me.

-Meg

Yeah, looking at the Columbia UU website it seems like they do a lot of that, all "spiritual" instead of "religious".

I've never attended a meeting either - weekday nights are just not good, but I know weekends are out for our skydiving-instructor meeting organizer. (Do you still do that during cold weather months?)

One more thing about these winter holidays - I read in the book "Parenting Beyond Belief" that there's a movement called "Kristmas" - celebrating gift giving, tree-decorating, lighting up your house, cookie-baking etc. in a secular sense. (After all, those are all fun things that have nothing to do with supernatural dieties! :)

Speaking of which, any other atheist parents in the group? I have a 16 month-old son.

Also, anyone attend any Unitarian Universalist churches? (I HATE calling it a "church"!) Friends of ours attend UUC in Towson & told me most of the members seem to be atheists. I like the ideals & would like my son to be educated about religion (without being indoctrinated into it!) so we've started attending.

Heh - I've never made it to a meeting, and I spend the holidays with friends and family... I'm just adding my two cents to the conversation. But I'm actually just realizing that you and I have met before, Kevin...

At any rate, I would be more apt to attending if there were one in Howard County or southwestern Baltimore County...

So does that mean you'd be up for a meetup?

That is fantastic, it's a shame I can't be bothered to send out holiday cards... And I was thinking the same thing - I've effectively re-co-opted the holiday for my own purposes at this point... What better excuse to share a home-cooked meal and quality time with the family?

Well, it really SHOULD be "our holiday" - didn't the Christians steal it in the first place? ;) American Atheists has cards with a globe that say "Axial Tilt is the reason for the season."

My husband & I will be getting together with family, so we wouldn't be attending a meetup.

SO, first things first; there will be no meeting this month due to the meeting date falling on the day of the holiday. Next, want to hear from yo as to whether or not we would be interested in having a meetup on 12/24. After all, it's really not our holiday, but the culture makes it difficult to avoid. So, what do you think?
