VERY IMPORTANT: For those who want to continue the trip but live too far away from the MegaBus pickup in White Marsh, Boltbus and the Peter Pan Bus are located in downtown Baltimore and offer weekend bus service to New York City on Saturdays. The Boltbus pickup is located at Penn Station, and Peter Pan bus service is located at the Baltimore Greyhound bus station on Haines Street. Go to www.boltbus.com and www.peterpanbus.com for more information. If you choose to use one of these services, you can meet up with the group when you arrive in New York. I will provide my contact information days before the trip and I will meet up with you when you arrive in the city.
For this trip, our focus will be Astoria, a multiethnic community in the borough of Queens. We will also visit the Museum of the Moving Image, the country’s only museum that showcases the art, history, technique, and technology of the film and movie industry. We will also venture the area and view the multicultural scene of the community. At the end of our outing, we will walk to the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden for dinner and experience the annual Czech and Slovak Festival.
The Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden is the oldest beer garden in New York City. The beer garden contains a restaurant and an open courtyard with large crowds, where they serve beer and Czech food in the warm months. The Czech and Slovak Festival is an annual festival that has been a tradition in Astoria for many years and is held on Memorial Day weekends. At this festival you will see live entertainment, a brass band, folk dancing, and an unlimited serving of beer and Czech cuisine. Admission is free, but there is a cost for food and alcoholic beverages.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The cost of admission for the Museum of the Moving Image is $12. For those who are not interested in visiting the museum, you are free to venture around the neighborhood or find another place of your interest. I will continue to update the group on the status of the Czech and Slovak Festival to ensure that it will still take place.
