Neither only writing good MySQL queries can give the good performance, nor adding the additional hardware, as Performance != Scalability. To improve the performance, one has to think about the broader picture like:
- Web & application servers level
- Schema & choice of Engine
- Proxies and caching at different level
- Plan for replication / partitioning earlier
This talk is more about what things not to do followed by suggestions. This talk is targeting MySQL DB, however not limited to itself. Some of the concept can be adopted for Oracle etc other DBs as well.
