Santa Cause Bangkok - Deliver Christmas gifts to children of slum communities

Hi everyone!

Here is a great opportunity to bring gifts, smiles, positive energy and Christmas spirit to thousands of children from Bangkok's slum communities.

On Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th December, we'll go to different slum communities to deliver Christmas gifts to underprivileged children.

How does it work? We'll all meet at Centralworld, outside under the big Christmas tree, at 9am. We'll be divided into small teams. Each team will have a team leader (who will have received all the necessary instructions) and a Santa Claus, whose objective will be to dress up :) and distribute the gifts (donated) to the kids. The other team members will help carrying the gifts, taking pictures, spending time with the kids and so on. Each team will be given a map with specific communities to target and will head up there following the team leader instructions.

It's not only about delivering gifts but also spending time with the kids. So we'll have activities, games, songs and many others.

This year is the second year we're doing this event. Last year was on the 24th-25th December and I can say without any hesitation that it's been the most meaningful Christmas ever for me. It was pretty hard sometimes to see so many kids living in such conditions, especially that these people had then been through very hard times with the flood. But we all rediscovered the meaning of "giving" and Christmas spirit took all its sense there.

Better than words, watch this slideshow:

http://vimeo.com/34517592

How to participate?

1. Volunteer : We need people, we need hands and energy to reach as many kids as possible. The number of kids we'll deliver gifts will entirely depends on how many people we can gather these days. You can join one day or both if you're free. And if you can't, please spread the word to all those you think who could be interested!

2. Donate or organize collects : You can't join but you would like to participate? You can donate gifts that will be distributed on the event day, or you can donate money and the organizing team will go to buy gifts a few days before. Money can be donated by cash only.

You work in a company or a university and you think people there would be glad to donate gifts for such an event? Feel free to organize a collect at your office. If you decide to do so, please contact me to let me know which company/university/school you're targeting. I won't be able to help you collecting the gifts, as I organize myself several collects already but I'm always here to reply to any questions.

3. Spread the word!! Here is a link to download the official poster: http://www.sendspace.com/file/n5ximl Feel free to share and put it up anywhere you think it could have an impact (supermarkets, schools, universities etc.)

If you have facebook, here is the corresponding page: https://www.facebook.com/SantaCauseBangkok and you can also click attend on the events.

How to bring the gifts?

If you can join the event and bring the gifts by yourself it's the best. But if you can't join, or if you have way too many gifts to bring it by yourself (which would be awesome :D), two options:
- You can bring them along next week on the 8th December when we'll have our monthly networking meetup, then we'll take care of bringing them to Centralworld, where we have a storage room.

- You can bring them yourself to Centralworld before the event, or we can help you to pick them and go there with you, but in both case please contact us in advance to set up a day and time for an appointment.

Details regarding the gifts:

Please wrap the gifts as much as possible. There will be wrapping sessions from the 11th to 13th December at Centralworld for all the gifts who couldn't be wrapped before. But keep in mind that if you can wrap them in advance it would save us a lot of time.

Please write on the gift if it is for a boy or a girl (or both) and the age range, with a short description of the gift (pens, ball, doll, notebook, whatever).

Together, let's make this Christmas an unforgettable one.

Hi Celilu & Geraldine, I hope your day of delivering gifts went well today, I'm planning to come along tomorrow to get involved and can't wait. Just a thought, myself and my partner both work as journalists and would like to take photographs and do some short interviews with the kids/volunteers during the day tomorrow. Do you think this would be possible? If we get some good shots, we may be able to pitch the story to some of our clients and try and get some more coverage for you. Obviously no guarantees, but worth a go I think. I wanted to make sure there would be no problem with bringing our cameras along? Many thanks.

    December 15, 2012

    • Géraldine N.

Hi Rosie, thanks for your interest :) First, getting shots won't be a problem for sure. As for the interviews I really can't guarantee you. I need to talk with the organizers first and we need to talk also to the community leaders to know if they are ok with that. It's more up to the community if people there feel comfortable with being interviewed, for us it's all positive anyways :)

      December 15, 2012

    • Géraldine N.

So I'd say let's see tomorrow? Just bring along your cameras and we'll go with the flow, see you then!

Is the Central World we are meeting at on Sunday the one right near Phloem Chit BTS? Where abouts in Central World are we meeting, inside or outside?

    December 13, 2012

    • Géraldine N.

Central World is at Chitlom BTS station, and we're meeting outside, under the Christmas tree. See you there!

      December 13, 2012

  • Halona

Hi Geraldine and Cel, quick question about gifts. I know that most of the gifts were targetted for young kids, what about slightly older kids? Around 9-13 year olds? I just received cash donations today so am going to buy more gifts, should I get gifts for that age group? Thanks!

    December 13, 2012

    • Nett Petchprakai S.

Today, I just visited my family shop for buying gifts:) Now I got all for toddlers, 3-6yrs old, 7-12yrs old :D I' ll show you what I shop lol very fun&happy to choose gifts for the kids:)

Hi Aon, the meeting place is in Central world and there will be registration too, gift wrappings and other stuff before heading to the communities :)

      December 13, 2012

    • Géraldine N.

Yes, like said Celilu, please meet us at Central world. We don't know yet who will be heading to lak-si so that would be complicated.

      December 13, 2012

  • Yasmin J.

Hi Geraldine and Celilu, I am bringing around 300 boxes of color pencils and maybe some more items such as drawing papers and other items if I happen to think they are appropriate. However, I do not think I will manage to gift wrap them due to numbers of items. I hope it is OK if we can distribute them as they come?

FYI: I will take a car with me and can take two more passengers. I may also have to leave earlier than 5 PM.

    December 13, 2012

    • Géraldine N.

Hi Yasmin, that's awesome! No worries for the wrapping. We'll still do some wrapping on the event day in the morning and if it can't be finished we'll give them like that. I think all the very small items can be just given away without wrapping.

  • Su Z S.

Hello, is Sunday ok to come? I have to work on Saturday and collect some presents. I think I am going to have about 5 presents, toys. The presents are from a kid I used to tutor. She is leaving and although her toys are not brand new most of her toys are never touched and look almost new. Is that ok or does it have to be brand new? Please let me know! I can wrap in pretty wrappers but some are a bit bulky such as doll house and piano.

    1 · December 10, 2012

    • Géraldine N.

Hi Su! Sunday is great, no worries. People are free to join either one day or both :) As for the presents, no need to look brand new as long as they are not broken or look old. We accept second hand toys as long as they are in a good condition! And indeed if you can wrap it it's perfect, for those you can't, just bring them like that and we'll find a way. Thank you so much Su! Looking forward to meeting you then!

Hi, I really want to go with you guys on Saturday, tho I will have a class until 5 pm.. will I be too late ? or still can get in?

    December 8, 2012

    • Mimi

Hi Geraldine, I will be free on Sunday afternoon, is that alright?

      December 9, 2012

    • Géraldine N.

Actually we start at 9am, so we'll be already in the communities when you'll join us. You can try but I really can't guarantee if it's worth it, depends on which community you go and how long people will stay there. Plus you'll have to go there by yourself. Still want to give it a try?

      1 · December 9, 2012

  • James M.

Hi Geraldine...maybe I missed it, but can you tell me at what time the wrapping session will be?

    December 9, 2012

    • Géraldine N.

Hi James! The wrapping session will be from Tuesday to Thursday, from 7pm to 9pm at Centralworld, but I won't be there myself because I work late. I'll just drop by to bring the gifts, that's why I couldn't write it down here as a part of the event. If you want to join I'll get you in touch with the organizers who will be there for sure!

      December 9, 2012

  • Cel

If some of you are free this coming Saturday (Dec. 8), you can join Me, Ellen, Kasie and other friends as we decided to go Chinatown (Yaowarat) to buy gifts for the Santa Cause event to happen on the 15th and 16th. You're welcome& sorry for letting you guys know quite late because I have been little busy to post these. I saw that someone can't join the event&want to donate. However, they may have no idea which way to do or prefer to give things to cash. Therefore, this one can be another option. They can order products&transfer money to me. Then, I'll post the orders on this group& bring the gifts to the event. (I drive so I can carry a lot of things^_^).

Hello. I would like to know if second-hand toys and clothing are ok for donation (gently-used of course). I teach English to some young students and was going to ask their parents if they had any old items they'd like to donate. Please let me know if these are acceptable. They would be for very young kids, 4 and under.

    1 · December 6, 2012

    • Cel

You can bring them with you on Saturday (or Sunday) in Central World and all together we will wrap the gifts being brought by everyone. But we hope the toys aren't broken or too old. Thank you for your support! :)

      December 6, 2012

    • Géraldine N.

Please wrap the gifts as much as possible. There will be wrapping sessions the days before (from Tuesday to Thursday, 19.00 to 21.00 in Centralworld), but we're asking people to wrap them and tag them in advance (approximative age, boy/girl/both) to avoid wrapping gift on the D-day in order and be the most efficient possible :) Thanks for your understanding!

Hello, I'm trying to spread the word about volunteering, but I've been running into some questions I can't answer. Is there any religious association with what we are doing? Are we singing religious songs or quoting the bible? I have friends that will help as long as we aren't pushing religion. Thanks! Can't wait to see the happy faces!

    1 · December 4, 2012

    • Cel

Hi Amanda, that's a very good question. The Santa Cause promotes no religion at all. It's been started since last year and the intention is to send gifts to those underprivileged children in Bangkok during this holiday season. I myself holds no religion and if this cause will push any religious rites, activities etc, we will definitely not schedule it here in Meetup. Our volunteer group is Nonsectarian. Thanks to you and your friends interest! :)

      December 4, 2012

  • Géraldine N.

Hi everyone, regarding the gifts, there are many things you can give : dolls, teddy bears, sweets/biscuits, pens, toys, girl accessories, notebooks... As we're gonna have activities you can also bring games for the kids! From last year I remember that teddy bears were really successful as there are a lot of young children. Book is not the best as some kids can't read and we've seen they "strangely" enjoy much more playing with toys than reading a book ;)

If you could wrap the gifts that would be great. If you can't, we will have a wrapping session a few days before at our meeting place, but if you can already do it please do, so we won't spend too much time on this.
And it would be nice as well if you could write on the wrapped gifts what it is and if there's any specificity (ie for toddler only, or not less than 8 years olds...) so that we know what we give to who (i.e we won't give hair accessories to boys ;) that would be great!

Um I'm not sure if I can make it to Tuba. I have a few other things going that night as well. But we can def. make a "meet up" for shopping in Chinatown. The more things we buy from one vendor, the better prices we can all get! =) So Saturday morning say 9ish? or is that too early/late to get started there?
