I am a development professional having worked with various INGOs in South and SE Asia in rural development sector using Thailand as a base. I am interested in being engaged and learning more about community and environmental initiatives in Thailand.
Bangkok Volunteers is an excellent initiative to witness some of the development challenges and problems ordinary Thais and minorities (like Karen refugees and HIV orphans) face away from the tourist and expatriate areas in a middle income country that has been doing economically so well and is considered by the World Bank a major success story. For me working in development sector, lately 2 years in Bangladesh, I was almost thinking that real poverty did not exist in Thailand anymore. Although small in numbers and less extreme than Bangladesh it is still there. The strong point of Bangkok Volunteers is that they make you participate in activities and contribute to poverty alleviation in a very practical and hands on way. It would be good if the number of activities could be expanded so that more poor people can benefit and expatriates can contribute more to doing development.
