Re: [web-126] Hillsborough County and $15M

Looks like fishing and programming don't intertwine.

Don't know if you guys have seen a Bass Pro Shops before, but they are freaking gigantic. This is not a tackle and bait shop we are talking about. The BPS in Fort Myers is bigger and nicer than most *car dealerships* and include a gourmet restaurant. These are not all checkout clerk jobs. BPS's are a big deal and wildlife and fishing is a central part of Florida culture... that's why there is talk about the money.

It's not rare at all for companies looking to build buildings to be lured to states (and municipalities), with cash. Texas just gave Apple millions to build a building in Austin, and on the top of corporations lists when looking for new construction endeavors are tax breaks and free cash. Does apple need money? Nope. We know they don't. But building buildings is a big freaking deal.

You can debate whether it's worth 15 million, but I can tell you that a lot of that, if not all of it, is just going to leak back out to building contracts alone, and Florida badly, badly needs construction work right now.

Florida doesn't do enough to foster tech stuff, there can be no debate, but technical investment is extremely volatile and subject to high risk. There isn't much risky about building a building, and when you've got a state that's down to cutting public radio to stay in the black, it's not really time to hand a fortune over to someone so they can make "facebook for hair stylist business card makers" or "github for cats".

Trust me, they are not paying 15 million for someone to straighten fishing rods on a rack. They are paying to put gasoline in cement trucks.

So Hillsborough Count is dangling a carrot in front of Bass Pro Shops.
A $15 Million carrot to get them to open a store in Brandon.

Not for nothing, but couldn't that $15M be put to better use?

Is there really the jobs we want? Chain Retail stores and call centers?

$50,000 grants or loans to 300 start-ups would create 600 REAL jobs immediately!

Nice editorial about it here:

Could you contact your County Commissioner, please?
