Join Christopher McDougall, author of "Born to Run" for an epic barefoot run from Harlem to Brooklyn.
Run barefoot, near-barefoot, or fully shod but barefoot curious. Rediscover the fun of running barefoot, and tap into the natural quickness and strength buried in your soles. We'll party in the park before and after, and every step of the way. The full run is 8 miles, but feel free to join for any part of the run -- see course map for meeting points.
Chris will be giving a book talk at Word Bookstore, just near the finish, at 7:30pm. The cost is $25 (and includes the book), but there is no obligation for runners to attend.
THIS JUST IN: EVERYONE WHO MAKES THE RUN WILL BE ADMITTED TO THE BOOKSTORE EVENT FOR FREE. WORD HAS OFFERED TO WAIVE THE $25 CHARGE, MAKING IT THE ONLY STORE THAT WELCOMES BARE FEET.
Start: Marcus Garvey Park (NW corner at 124th and Mr. Morris Park)
Time: Run begins at 4pm. Runners will begin gathering at 3pm.
Route: Join us anywhere along the way. We'll be entering Central Park at Malcom X and 110th. We'll be running on East Drive all the way down through Central Park. We'll be exiting Central Park at 60th St. and 5th Avenue. Then crossing the Queensboro Bridge to Brooklyn
Finish: American Playground, near Word Bookstore at 126 Franklin Street, Brooklyn (Franklin and Milton)
To sign up for the run, please RSVP here.
For media inquires, please contact Christopher McDougall or John Durant.
I'm going to race up to make the start but might try to catch you guys on the east drive. Can't wait!
So we run the whole way and get into the talk free? Am I understanding that correctly? I might actually be able to convince more of my friends to come if thats the case...
Hey, kudos to the Word Bookstore for not charging an admissions fee! I'm still going to get a copy of the book, though; was going to order through Amazon, but am especially glad to purchase from the Word Bookstore instead! BTW, how many girls on this run?? =) I'm trying to convince some fence-sitters to come along!
Yes David and Arseny, the book talk is now free to people that run with us. See you tomorrow!
This was such an awesome time!! Great run everyone!
I haven't ran in a group in over a decade, to cadence as an Army infantryman, and this run was really interesting in how it was both similar and different to that kind of experience. There was the same powerful self-sustaining energy, but channeled in a different way. I look forward to joining the next human-millipede y'all organize! Thanks to everyone -- and I mean that literally -- for making this run what it was...and still is.
It was really an awesome experience! It was great to meet Chris and connect with other barefoot runners. Hope to see all of you on future runs!
John and Maggie,
Thanks for organizing such a fun run with Christopher.
The run had a great vibe, and I enjoyed chatting with so many nice folks.
What's not to like about a run that ends with donuts?
Even Christopher admitted that the Tarahumara would swap their Chia seeds for a Red-Velvet Cake Donut...
I hope to be able to join in the next "event"
Thanks John and Maggie for organizing. I had a great time meeting and talking with so many other runners. Chris is truly a class act and I'm sorry I couldn't stay for his talk.
Congrats and well done to all the runners, and huge thanks to John and Maggie, organizers extraordinaire, and our tireless (literally) sweepers Chris and Melissa, and of course many many thanks to Christopher McDougall for being up for anything and turning a great run into an amazing one-of-a-kind experience, and so much fun!
Oh, Maggie, Maggie...I'm so sorry to have forgotten. Many, many thanks for helping John organize this thing. It was GREAT!!! Now, if you could just move to NYC... ; )
I second the motion from the Honorable gentlewoman of Washington Hts..... c'mon Maggie, take your talents to NYC!
ps GO IRISH!
Can't stop smiling about Wednesday, thanks again everyone.

(hope links work)
Wow, thanks for the links, Joe! Too bad both, uh, nooze orgs felt the need to add the "good-natured" jibe for a coda. I myself am not, as the expression goes, sold on barefoot running -- for myself -- but I find that even gently dismissive attitudes create a sort of chilling effect for many whose main goal in life is avoiding ridicule, and thus reinforcing that very fear.
Great run everyone. Here is a link for a video I made of the run

Best,

Hi all. I posted my pics but I also took a few short videos (sorry for the "bouncing"). You can look at them, download them, etc., at http://gallery.me.com/micheledelia
.
This was such a cool introduction to barefoot running. I still can't shake the sensation off -- and every photo and video update just gets me feeling all frisky and wanting to take off my sneaks and run right now!!! Really, if only there was some way to package this run in a bottle, the whole country would be Forrest Gumping (or Durant-McDougalling) it!!!
Thanks for all the great photos guys, and special thanks for organizing John and Maggie! THAT was fun.
Log in to Meetup with your Facebook account.
It would be great if you could post a map of the run on your blog or here or where ever would be appropriate.
