Central Park (map)
Hi folks,
I'm going to lead a Beginner's Workshop on Sunday afternoon.
We'll cover barefoot running basics, proper form, posture, and useful tips. This workshop will be focused on actually doing it yourself, not just listening. You don't need any equipment but your feet. Bring your VFFs or minimalist shoes if you have them, but we're going to do some drills and practice totally barefoot too.
In advance, check out our new website for a great instructional video and a few tips: http://barefootnyc.co...
See you out there,
John
Location: West side of the park, at the W. 85th St. entrance to Central Park.
Time: 4:30pm
I think the last beginner's clinic lasted about an hour or so. We do run, but strictly to introduce/help people get an idea of the form. We stuck to the W85th street entrance last time because it provides a nice stretch of asphalt with a little bit of hill thrown in. We did a lot of back and forth, stopping to answer questions, etc. Not sure how what John has planned this time, but I expect it to be a similar format.
All very sensible -- thanks, Melissa! I asked 'cause I was wondering whether to bike in from Brooklyn or ride the subways. If this workshop doesn't don't venture far, I could easily lock my bike up with no qualms.
No, we won't be venturing far. What Melissa described is what we'll do. Just back and forth on one strip. Last time we had a pile of backpacks in site at all times.
Thanks for the confirmation, John! And, actually, I'm gonna take off my shoes and join in instead of simply watching and listening like I'd originally intended! Um, I'm sure this sounds like a silly question...but I'll ask anyway: what do you guys do for dirty feet? I'm serious -- I don't think simple soap and water will do and I feel like I should get one of them "sandpaper soap" auto mechanics use! Thanks again.
Simple soap and water and a good scrub work for me - for the most part. A chlorinated pool is a dream. Instant clean feet. Probably meaningless if you're not a swimmer, but if you are... A member of the group mentioned to me once that Mr. Clean Wall Sponges are quite effective, but I haven't tried. And I've heard that dishwashing liquid works. Makes sense to me because it cuts grease.
Thanks again, Melissa! Soap and water makes sense -- but I think the hard scrubbing will be too ticklish! I think I'll have some of that industrial foliated liquid soap on sale in the hardware store. =) See you all Sunday!
I use dishwashing soap and I have pictures of my foot clean routine here -- http://barefootfresca.blogspot.com/2010/06/care-and-keepi...![]()
-- but I LOVE the chorine pool tip. After the run on the sidewalks in Harlem I learned of a dirt of a much deeper kind!
That's exactly what I'm afraid of, Frances -- that "dirt of a deeper kind!" As an avid cyclist, I am already leery of NYC street surfaces, and I as an avid urban hiker I know that my feet get dirty just from walking in sandals. I'm especially concerned about oils and fungi...but barefooting really seems like the way to go, so...well, see you later at the workshop!

Just curious: how long do you expect this workshop to take? Will there be a run as well? How long (distance and time-wise)?
