International Observe the Moon Night SOUTH!

The Barnard Astronomical Society will be setting up telescopes for International Observe the Moon Night at 5:00 PM. Amateur Astronomers will be on hand to man the telescopes so you can get a good look at the moon as well as some solar observations before the sun sets. As it gets darker we will be looking at and discussing various objects in the night sky.

Program is FREE but the usual park parking fee of $5.00 per car applies.

We will be set up near the Interpretive Center. No special equipment needed except maybe a lawn chair. Anyone that might have a telescope and have questions about how to use it properly, by all means bring it and we will try to help you.

Out of curiosity, why is this set for 5pm rather than after sunset, which is apparently over 2 hrs later?

Couple of reasons, actually. The moon will be up and visible all afternoon, and it is neat to be able to check it out in a scope during the day. Second, we will try to get some solar observing in as well. People are amazed that we can look at the SUN through our telescopes. I'm not sure what will be available at Cloudland for solar observing, but at Coolidge Park I will have a scope and binoculars filtered for the Sun.

Carl, We chose the 5:00 time because it was successful last year. People are out roaming around at that hour and interest builds as the evening progresses. Until sunset we have an opportunity for solar observing as well as lunar and as it get darker it just gets better. As we did last year, we will stay as long as there is interest. We will have several scopes set up so we will be viewing other objects after dark as well as the moon. In case you missed it,we are doing the same at Coolidge Park. For info on that one contact Richard.
