Hello fellow BathSPARKer,
The Bath Digital Festival kicks off on Thursday 14th March - yes, that's just one week away! Now is the time to take a good look at the events and book your tickets to make sure you avoid missing out. If you need a bit of help in deciding what to do, here are BathSPARK's top 5 picks from an amazing programme of events:
- The SPARKies Awards Ceremony (headline sponsor: The University of Bath Innovation Centre), Wednesday 20 March, Komedia
After last year's sell-out inaugural event, we have made the event bigger and are opening up the balcony to increase overall capacity. Having said that, due to high demand, tickets will sell out. Get yours now!
- XML Masterclasses, Sunday 24 March, Bath City Hilton
Last year, the X Media Lab conference was one of the biggest hits of the festival thanks to inspirational speakers from all over the globe. This year, XML returns to Bath with a series of masterclasses from world-renowned speakers including the team behind the visual effects for Skyfall, Batman, Inception and Harry Potter, 4-time Emmy award winning interactive TV pioneer Dale Herigstad, Channel 4′s multiplatform director Hilary Perkins who works with programmes like Skins, Misfits, Hollyoaks and Shameless, and ex-BBC mobile manager and digital entrepreneur Jason DaPonte.
- Illuminate Bath Digitrope, 15-16 March, Roman Baths, Stall Street
This is going to be very cool. Members of the public are invited to be teleported into the Digitrope by standing in front of the camera and performing for a few seconds before watching a 20-metre wide projection showing your time-delayed image along the Digitrope’s nine 2-metre high windows.
- Hack weekend at Peter Gabriel's Real World studios, Saturday 16 - Sunday 17 March
Teams and individuals are coming in from all over the UK to build games, apps and mashups using Gabble andThe Filter APIs in a completely unique setting. What can you do with a visual dictionary (linking pictures to words) and/or a recommendation engine for music, movies and TV shows? Four £500 prizes are up for grabs! If you want to participate, let me know (email@example.com) as I have a special BathSPARK code that enables you to enter a team of 3 people for just one ticket. Food drinks and transport to and from the studios (in Box) will be provided.
- Two Techie Brekkies, Tech & Education 18 March, Gaming 20 March, Jika Jika
BathSPARKers are familiar with the Techie Brekkie format: breakfast at Jika Jika with 20 people discussing a specific subject. During the festival there are two: one on Gaming and one on Tech in Education. This type of event consistently gets high ratings from participants because of the intimate nature and the ability to easily chat and network with very relevant people in a specific sector.
There are over 20 events at this year's festival, so make sure you check out the full schedule and take your pick! To ensure that the tech sector builds on the positive momentum, it is important that we get as many people participating as possible, so please book and turn up to as many events as you possibly can! And spread the word.
A big thank you to all of the sponsors, especially to The SPARKies headline sponsors The Innovation Centre and Gold sponsors Eden Ventures, Deloitte Digital and The Agency (also a sponsor of the Festival), and to Bath Digital Festival Gold sponsors IPL, Bath & North East Somerset Council and Thrings Solicitors.
Have a great festival, and see you at one (or more) of the events.
The BathSPARK team.
