Snowshoeing Through Tunnels and Sheds w/ Lunch Overlooking Beautiful Donner Lake

This was shot at the entrance to the first tunnel.

Not sure the scenery gets much better than what you'll take in on this hike!

Never snowshoed before?  Then you definitely don't want to miss this one.

The tunnels are frozen inside w/ beautiful ice formations like you haven't seen before.  Some tunnels are lit w/ shafts of light, while others are lit only by our headlamps and flashlights.  The floors of the tunnels are like icefields which make this one exciting hike!  The views outside the tunnels are just incredible.  You'll see the mighty Sierras and eventually Donner Lake, where we'll have lunch.

These shots were taken last Sat (Feb 9th) on this same hike.

This is not your typical hike, nor are the views at all typical.   Having done this one before, I can assure you this will be an amazing adventure you will never forget.

The hike is about 6 miles and is flat w/ some incline - and I'll call it moderate because we're in snowshoes.  This will be an all day trip, and we'll go for dinner after the hike.  You'll be hungry from burning calories all day, and we'll be back that evening.

You can reserve your snowshoes w/ poles at any REI for  $27 to pick up the day before (Friday).  Equipment is due back in at REI on Monday - perfect deal.

For those who want to, we'll be stopping in Old Town Auburn for dinner.  You'll be hungry after burning calories all day.

What To Bring:

Vino! and cups

Snowshoes

Hiking poles suggested, though not required

Boots - hopefully waterproof

Daypack with snacks, food (lunch) (+ food to share) vino & cups!

Warm layered clothes & a plastic tarp or blanket to sit on at lunch

Head warmer (hat, knit hat, hood, etc.)

Camera - You'll have many, many, unique pictures to show your friends

Sense of Adventure and Merriment!

$5 Fun fee

Everyone coming from The Bay Area will meet at Round Table Pizza in Vacaville at 7:00am. 888 Alamo Dr, Vacaville

I WILL MEET YOU THERE.

DIRECTIONS:
Exit I 80 at Alamo/Merchant - as the ramp splits continue straight and you'll go up and over the hwy.   Getting into the left lane (before coming down the other side) you'll turn left on Merchant (as if you were getting back on I 80 heading west), you'll immediately see Round Table on your right.  Turn into the parking lot and we'll meet there. Need I mention your sense of humour is required?

Vanessa ~ great meeting you, and I had a blast teaching you new xtreme downhill snowshoe skills! LOL!
Tomorrow I will post a bunch of photos, onto FB, from today's super-fun trek. Are you on FB? We can connect that way, and then you can pick and choose the photos you want. You can find me on FB @: Christopher Dean Coble.

    see you all tomorrow!!!! :)

Looking forward to this! I've mt. biked through these tunnels, never snowshoed/hiked. I can put together a gluten-free car for carpooling if others are interested.

Does everyone here have a ride?

I will be looking to jump in w/ someone at Vacaville.

    March 19, 2013

    • Chris

Chas, I plan on joining you all. Will there be carpooling from Vacaville? Is it legal/safe to leave cars @ Round Table or somewhere close?
Did you see my post about Burger Me in Truckee? It doesn't add much time to the overall trip and has Excellent food! I'm gluten free, and so when we're selecting for carpools, if there are a couple others who prefer/need gf dining, maybe we can get a gf (gluten-free) car together.

      1 · March 22, 2013

  • Chris

btw, Burger Me, just as you come into old town Truckee has Amazing burgers and sweet potato fries!!!!! It's only 14 minutes from Soda Springs (which is the area from which I assume the 'shoeing' will start).

I am Seriously considering this; it sounds Awesome! I was planning on mt. bike racing in Monterey, and yet, this hike sounds very cool! I've mt. biked through these tunnels several times and to snowshoe through them (w/ya'll) would be other-worldly. My hesitation(s): 7am and an all-day trip make it tough.
If I decide to join, I live in Concord, and am willing to carpool.
