I did this hike 2 years ago, and this was shot at the entrance to the first tunnel.

Not sure the scenery gets much better than what you'll take in on this hike!

Never snowshoed before?  Then you definitely don't want to miss this one.

The tunnels are frozen inside w/ beautiful ice formations like you haven't seen before.  Some tunnels are lit w/ shafts of light, while others are lit only by our headlamps and flashlights.  The floors of the tunnels are like icefields which make this one exciting hike!  The views outside the tunnels are just incredible.  You'll see the mighty Sierras and eventually Donner Lake, where we'll have lunch.

This is not your typical hike, nor are the views at all typical.   Having done this one before, I can assure you this will be an amazing adventure you will never forget.

The hike is about 6 miles and is flat w/ some incline - and I'll call it moderate because we're in snowshoes.  This will be an all day trip, and we'll go for dinner after the hike.  You'll be hungry from burning calories all day, and we'll be back that evening.

You can reserve your snowshoes w/ poles at any REI  for approx $30-$35 to pick up the day before (Friday).  Equipment is due back in at REI on Monday - perfect deal.

What To Bring:

Snowshoes

Hiking poles suggested, though not required

Boots - hopefully waterproof

Daypack with snacks, food (lunch) and vino!

Warm layered clothes & a plastic tarp or blanket to sit on at lunch

Head warmer (hat, knit hat, hood, etc.)

Headlamp or flashlight

Water

Camera - You'll have many, many, unique pictures to show your friends

Sense of Adventure and Merriment!

$5 Fun fee

I will post more details in January

Directions:

Hwy 80 East toward Reno for approximately 73 miles.
Exit I-80 at Soda Springs/Norden Exit 174.
Turn right at stop sign and follow the road for 3.5 miles. Donner Ski Ranch will be on the left and  we'll park on the right side of the road by the maintenance buildings.  It will be obvious when we get there, but then retrospect is always the knowledgeable perspective, now isn't it?

Need I mention your sense of humour is required?

I'm coming from the Alameda/Oakland area. Is anyone interested in carpooling from that area?

Meet at Round Table Pizza in Vacaville at 7:00am.
888 Alamo Dr, Vacaville I WILL MEET YOU THERE.
From there we will caravan to Donner Ski Ranch, making one stop to pick up carpoolers in Roseville. DIRECTIONS:
Exit I 80 at Alamo/Merchant - as the ramp splits continue straight and you'll go up and over the hwy. Getting into the left lane (before coming down the other side) you'll turn left on Merchant (as if you were getting back on I 80 heading west), you'll immediately see Round Table on your right. Turn into the parking lot and we'll meet there.
GPS [masked],[masked] It is imperative you arrive on time, as we will have another stop in Roseville to pick up carpoolers, so plan on arriving early. You'll be calorie drained after this one, so we're having dinner (optional) at the Summit Restaurant & Bar. Be sure you bring WATERPROOF BOOTS and SKI GLOVES.

Bring cash to pay your drivers for gas and parking.

Also my husband and I are starting to do enough snowshoeing that it's time to just buy our own. Any advice? Features to look for, good manufacturers, vendors with good prices, etc...

Hi Chas, so do you expect that regular sedans w/o snowchains will be fine going up to Donner?

Is this possibly a trip that can tolerate a leashed dog who loves cold climates?

Several members have contacted me about finding carpools. Would you guys please post details about carpooling and from what locations, so everyone can find rides? Thx!

January came and went, and no further details were posted. Did the organizer die in an avalanche somewhere?

    February 1, 2013

  • Stacy

This looks amazing! I live in SF and would not mind driving as long as people chipped in for gas.

    January 31, 2013

  • susan

I would happily so more than "chip in for gas" - drive, pay for a tank of gas, tell good stories, whatever. My car is not snow-safe. Is there a ride available? Thanks!

    January 28, 2013

  • Dana F.

Do you think it is easy enough for a 7 year old?

    January 18, 2013

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
