Poetry hike: Mt Diablo circuit

NOTE:  Date changed to Sunday Dec 22.

Note: use this link to get the Google map location and driving directions to Juniper Campground.

The Hike

This is a moderate/strenuous 8-9 mile mile circuit of Mt Diablo with a visit to the summit and some other side trips.  Around 2500 feet of elevation gain.  We'll start at Juniper Campground and do the route in clockwise direction.

This is moderate/strenuous hike and not recommended for novice or slow hikers.  My pace will be about 2.2 mph.

Meeting Details:

Meet at 10:00 am sharp at the Juniper Campground in Mt. Diablo state park. Allow enough driving time because of the winding road inside the park.  I will not wait long for stragglers.  See driving directions below. $10 entrance fee for the park.

Weather Cancellation:

If the forecast for Clayton is 40%+ chance of rain, then I will cancel the hike.

I can take three passengers - please contact me directly. I'll be leaving from the Outer Richmond neighborhood in SF.

What is a Poetry Hike?

If you like, bring a short poem or an excerpt of a longer one. Two or three times during the hike, we'll stop briefly and people can recite the poems they brought. This is completely optional, and the stops will be brief. You can bring poetry from the literature or your own. More poetry at lunch. This is something I did for years as a hike leader in Washington DC and it was a lot of fun.

Driving Directions:

From I-680 near Danville, take Exit 40 El Cerro Blvd East. Continue on El Cerro Blvd east for 1 mile, where it becomes Diablo Rd. Continue on Diablo Rd for 2.2 miles, then turn left on Mt Diablo Scenic Blvd. Continue for 3.7 miles to the South Gate Entrance Station, then turn left and drive 3.2 miles to the Park HQ at the junction of North Gate Rd and Summit Rd. Turn right on Summit Rd and drive 2.3 miles to the paved parking area at the entrance to Juniper Campground.
