San Francisco Atheists September Meeting

SF Atheists September Meeting

What is it with religious people?  Why atheists need to understand, what we know about indoctrination, motivation on all sides, why children are special, the “faith” of secular humanism and why it’s important, and new guerrilla tactics for averting a doomed future.

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Marlene Winell to speak to us this month. Dr. Winell is a human development consultant, educator, and writer. Her background includes 28 years of experience in human services, in both community and academic settings. She holds a doctorate in Human Development and Family Studies from Pennsylvania State University.

A special area of expertise is Dr. Winell's work on religious recovery, based on both personal and clinical experience. Inspired by her own journey out of Christian fundamentalism, she works with clients who have experienced a variety of damaging religious influences. This inspired her first book, Leaving the Fold: a Guide for Former Fundamentalists and Others Leaving Their Religion, published in 1994. Since then, Marlene has specialized in this area of work -- consulting, teaching, and leading recovery workshops for people coming out of various religions. Her services related to recovery from religion can be found at www.journeyfree.org.

This was my first meet up with the San Francisco group. I was a bit disappointed. Part of the problem was unforeseeable. The speaker being late and then the AV equipment not working. But lastly I was disappointed in the speaker. Much of what she said was just rambling on and confusing. She seemed to have no true goal or conclusion to what she was trying to get to. I won't give up after just one meeting. I'll be back for more.

Well, I have been calling myself a recovering Catholic for 20 years now and to me it meant recoverig from being under the influence of a centuries old dogma which is a sin to question. So, yes I'm recovering but far away from recovered. 40 years of indoctrination doesn't let go without a fight. I still look over my shoulder sometimes to see if you-know-who is still watching my every move...

We've all "left the fold", so that's old stuff. What we,( wife and I) are interested in is indoctrination, "being saved", and maybe extended Lorenzian imprinting in humans, --Or how come we're still so sick after 2,000 plus years of highly touted "intelligence"? John A.L. Osborn,- and wife, Lorrie. 'Sounds interesting!
