As a complement to its ongoing activities, Bay Area Humanists (BAH) is launching a reading/discussion group. The text for the group will be one of the many excellent anthologies published by the Great Books Foundation or GBF. This approach has several advantages
First, since the readings are selected by GBF experts, the quality of the writing is consistently high, usually excellent. Second, the selections average twenty to thirty pages in length. This enables the close reading that great writing usually demands and rewards, and it enables us to examine each reading carefully at a single meeting. Third, it is inexpensive: most GBF anthologies costs $30 or less, and each has about eighteen selections, enough to keep us busy for a year and a half. Fourth, great literature is at the heart of the humanities, and working through great literature together is an excellent way to enhance community. This will be especially so if we carry on the great BAH tradition of adjourning to a local restaurant after each meeting to continue our discussions there.
If you want to join the reading group, please come to this meeting. We will discuss the time, place of our future meetings, and which anthologies to start with. Check out their more recent titles. If you are interested, even if you cannot attend the meeting, send the reading group coordinator, Marty Carcieri ([masked]) an e-mail.
