San Francisco Atheists July Meeting

SF Atheists present Dr. Richard Carrier -- On the Historicity of Jesus

We are pleased to welcome back Dr.Richard Carrier to discuss his highly anticipated new book, On the Historicity of Jesus: Why We Might Have Reason for Doubt. Published by Sheffield-Phoenix, a major peer reviewed academic press well-respected in the field of biblical studies, this work provides a comprehensive defense of an alternative theory of the origins of Christianity, without an actual historical Jesus. Dr. Carrier will summarize the organization and argument of the book and take your questions. This will be the first time he will be directly selling and signing copies of this new book to the public.

Available for sale after the talk: softcover $30, and for die hards, Dr. Carrier will also have a couple of hardcover editions on hand, which sell for $80. Cash, checks, and credit cards accepted. Also available on Amazon.

Great Topic!! Religion began as a strategic means with which early mankind 'appeased' the Gods (as with the Greek philosophy) for favorable environmental / living conditions and to explain why adverse events occurred, which challenged early mankind's existence. Today's religion is simply an evolved extrapolation of early mankind's superstitious beliefs which helped rationalize their world and how it worked. Jesus probably WAS an existent Prophet who possessed superior capabilities whereby he explained how people should treat each other and how they could attain God's acceptance. Most of his peers simply couldn't comprehend the relatively advanced theories he was trying to enlighten them with! But, he was NOT the self-claimed Son-of-God! Even HE couldn't comprehend exactly what God (the Universe's 'creator') was/is......
