Ohlone Regional Wilderness – Sunol to Del Valle

This will be a fun, beautiful and challenging hike from Sunol to Del Valle. We will start out at the Sunol Visitors Center and head out from there. The total trip distance will be approximately 21 miles and 4500 feet in elevation gain and descent. On day 1 we will hike to Maggie’s Camp approx. 11 miles in and 3500 feet in elevation gain. For those who are interested we will do an optional excursion up to the top of Rose Peak where the views on a clear day are suppose to be spectacular. On day 2 we will head to Del Valle with approx. a total of 1000 feet gain. Depending on what the group wants to do we can deviate from the trail to go by Murietta Falls if we think there might be some water flowing. This trip will require a car shuttle and we will likely need to have 2 cars at Del Valle and we can leave one at Sunol. Car permits are required and currently I have asked for 3. This hike is for experienced backpackers only due to the significant elevation gain and descent. Given this is a difficult hike prior to confirming folks to this trip I will want to talk to you about your backpacking experience. The total fee for the permit per person is $7. If the weather is too extreme – too hot or rainy the trip will be rescheduled for a later date.

Beautiful pictures Renee! Where was that lily pad pond? It looks so out of place in that landscape.

Had a great time with great company. I could have skipped the wrong turn :) but was glad to learn some cow herding skills. Lovely landscape!

Great way to start the season. Beautiful golden hills with oak trees, blue sky and white clouds. The weather God was with us. Perfect weather for climbing some challenging hills. And of course, great company.

I'm going to need a ride if anyone can offer one. If I can't get one, I'm going to have to change my RSVP. Hopefully someone lives around a Bart or Captain station.

Hi Sarah, do you still need a ride? I am coming from Santa Clara, I can pick you up from Fremont or Pleasanton bart station.

I got the additional parking passes yesterday so we are set. It sounds like we might want to bring our own cooking systems....if anyone wants to share let me know.

Great! Thanks Renee. I would like to share gear to lighten up the load.

I also wanted to check on if folks want to share gear. Generally I share the following - water filter/purification system, gas, pots and stove. I have all of these things and probably 3 of each :) and I 'm happy to bring these along.

I have a compact stove and a some utensils that I will be bringing. I don't have a water purifier. I usually use the tablets. Any recommendations for a good UV water purifier?

      May 13, 2013

    • Renee

I have a few filters now - I have a steri pen but will use that for trekking vs. backpacking since I worry about it failing in the backcountry, I also have the Platy filter systems…so 2 Platy's with a filter in between it's great for groups and then I have the Katadyn…I've used this filter for years and it's so dependable…I usually use the tablets as back up…but everything depends on the trip. If I want to go lightweight tablets are the best.

I've added some more detail about the trip after picking up the Ohlone Wilderness Trail permit yesterday….see the trip description.

Also on the first day we will be climbing about 3500 ft. vs. 4000 ft. (yeah…sorta yeah :) …since that will still be a stiff climb).

If we have 4 cars I have to call EB Parks to get another parking pass they couldn't take care of that at Coyote Hills.

    • Nitya

I'll call them tomorrow/Monday about getting another permit.

      May 12, 2013

    • Renee

Hi Nitya - I am calling EB Parks this morning when I got the car permits this weekend there was only 2 :( so I needed to call them anyways…I am going to ask for 2 more

So it sounds like we have at least 3 Subarus since Nora has a Forrester and I have an Outback. Jeannie I think it make sense if you left your car at Del Valle since it will make more sense for you to leave from Del Valle back home on Sunday. I think we will need at least 3 cars to rendevouz at Del Valle and just have one drive back to the Visitor's center with no more than 4 of us. I will be going to the Visitor's Center this weekend so I can send out more information regarding directions, etc.

If we do end up with 4 cars we have to arrange for a permit in advance I believe. Right now I have 3 car permits…I can look into that this weekend.

Renee, I don't mind being a shuttle, however, I drive a smaller sedan (Corolla). I don't mind buying another parking permit and parking at Sunol, so that we can have two cars at Del Valle and two at Sunol. Not sure, just thinking out aloud.

    May 9, 2013

  • Jeannie

I'm coming from Sacramento --drive a Subaru Outback which seats 5, with cargo space in the back--would be happy to join the shuttle. I'll need the exact address & time. I'm relying on my iPhone map, as I'm not familiar with the area.

Hi. I live in Benicia. I'm on the wait list. If I get in, I'd like to carpool!! Will pay for gas.

      May 9, 2013

  • Renee

I believe the shuttle between Del Valle and Sunol will take between 45 mins and an hour and the the sooner we get on the trail the better since it will be cooler in the morning. I think we should plan on hitting the trail around 9:30 I think any earlier is going to be tough given the shuttle and driving over to Livermore. We will need to leave 2 cars at Del Valle and then at least one in Sunol at the start of the hike. I think before we can completely figure this out we probably need to understand where Jeannie is coming from.

    • Nitya

I'm guessing that we'll need largish vehicles in order to accommodate 5 people and backpacks?

    • Jeannie

      Hi Everyone.

      May 9, 2013

  • Renee

I apologize ladies for not starting to share more information I've been out of town the last 5 weekends so I'm trying to get my head above water and plan to do so this week :) Elahe and Nitya would you mind send me an email telling me about your recent backpacking experience.

Also I think we will need a total of 3 cars for the shuttling required so it would be helpful to know where folks are coming from and if they will be driving. I will be coming from Burlingame and Nora is in the South Bay.

    May 6, 2013

    • Nitya

I hope you got my message/email. If I'm in, could you send out more details about the when/what/how of coordinating for this trip? Thanks!

      May 8, 2013

  • Nora K

I am in Santa Clara. Since we need 3 cars for shuttling, I will be happy to participate in shuttling. If anybody wants to carpool, I am available.

    May 8, 2013

  • Nora K

Hi Elahe, good to see you in cyberspace. Looking forward to hiking together again :)

I lost the opportunity to write to leader about my backpacking experience. I will try to message the leader later with details.
