Beginners+ Butano SP Overnight - Dog Friendly

Have you been wanting to try out backpacking, get back into it after a hiatus, try out some new gear before taking it to the Sierras, or just ease into the season? This is your trip!

We'll take Gazos Trail to Olmo Fire Road. There is a 1,300 ft elevation gain over the 6 miles. The trail camp is not next to any water, but there is a source approx. 15 minutes away. The trail camps are cute - many with logs carved for benches and some have mini tables. There is a pit toilet!

Because dogs are only allowed on the fire road, I will likely be hiking out the same way we came in. There are other nice options for making a loop that are approximately the same distance. Nobody will be left to hike on their own (unless that's what you really want - in which case you probably aren't coming on our MeetUp!)

The fee is $10 for parking and $15 per site (up to 8 people), so we will pay $15 or $30 for the campsite(s).  We will split the cost. Please bring small change.

*Have a look at Lorraine's suggested packing list on the BABW page. Under More, select Files.

**Because this is geared toward beginners, please send me a message after RSVPing with some brief info on your experience, any major gear you need, and any questions you may have.

As the date gets closer, I'll set-up a Google doc so we can coordinate rides and shared gear.

Looking forward to seeing you out there!!

Here is a link to the Google Doc.  Please fill out your info. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AoVldvM72XKtdGpwVmVjdF9YS1NCenVBdzloR1owRkE&usp=sharing

Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!! It's going to be a VERY WARM day so don't forget your hat, sunscreen and lots of water :)

If you need to contact me, please try to do so before 11:30AM since reception will probably be spotty. Please be sure to let me know if your plans change so we don't wait for you.

Sorry that I have to change my plan at this point. Something urgent happens at work, so I have to work this weekend.

    Hi,
It seems that the RSVP is closed but there is still 1 spot left? a friend of mine would like to join us, can she still do?

    June 27, 2013

    • Sara P.

Hi Sylvia, that's fine! I closed the RSVPs early since this is usually something you need to plan for, but if your friend is ready, that's great! I added you as a +1. Please add her info to the spreadsheet.

      Thanks Sara!

Not feeling well enough to go on this one ladies. Sorry for the last minute change.

  • Sara P.

Hi ladies! I've added the Google Doc to the trip description. Please fill it out at your earliest convenience. If you have ANY questions or concerns, please feel free to call or email me directly. Most things are easy to address beforehand, but can be more difficult once we get to the park.

Hi, I am new to this group, so I am looking forward to my first trip! I live in Redwood city, about 2 miles east to the junction of 84 and 280. I am interested in carpooling. I can drive, but my car has check-engine sign on recently, so I am a bit hesitant to drive too far from town. Does anyone still have space in the car? I can share gas and mileage. I love dogs too. I have two dogs, but they are not coming with me this time. thanks!

    June 24, 2013

  • Leah

I have an extra light weight backpacking air mattress pad if any needs to use it. Also I have room for 1 to 2 more people if anyone wants to carpool. I am in mountain view. I also have a stripin to sanitize water and a jet boil and a pocket rocket stove. Let me know what you want me to bring.

Hey Leah - I've got a stove but no pots, are you willing to share your jetboil? I've got freeze dried food on the menu, so all I need is hot water :)

      June 16, 2013

    • Leah

No problem with the jet boil. If a lot of people are going to use it I just ask that someone brings an extra fuel canister.

I will be sending around a confirmation email the weekend of the 15th. Please look for it and respond so I know you are still interested and able to come! I will get the info about the water availability ASAP.

For those on the waiting list: Since there is so much interest, I hope to schedule another beginner-oriented 1-nighter in July. If there is a specific weekend you're interested in (13th, 20th, or 27th), let me know and I can try to accommodate it.

    • Sara P.

Leah, that sounds great! Contact Lorraine who can make you an organizer.

Hi! I would like to join the trip in July! 20th or 27th works well for me.

      1 · June 11, 2013

I have an extra spot in my tent if anyone wants to share with me and my 8lb yorkie. Probably not enough room for someone with a big dog though.

I just realized my number is wrong. My number is[masked]-3128. Talk to you soon.

      June 11, 2013

    • Nutan

Hey Leah , i called you couple of times but call was not going through :) will call you today on the correct no. !

      June 11, 2013

  • Sara P.

Update: I visited the park this weekend and the water is trickling in the nearby creek! I would expect for there to be water still available in two weekends, but would suggest packing all your water if you are wary of potentially standing water. The elevation gain was actually somewhat challenging.

It was an unusually hot weekend and I did this without my dog. If it is expected to be over 70 degrees, I don't plan to bring my dog since he doesn't do very well hiking in the heat. Please keep that in mind if you're bringing your dog. The forecast is in the low to mid 60s for the next 10 days, but it will get warmer as we ascend.

Please look out for an email tomorrow if you are RSVP'd yes and confirm by replying that you will still attend. Please respond by Saturday night or you may be removed from the list to make room for someone on the waitlist. OR just send me a message directly any time before then!

I'll send out the Google doc for gear and ride sharing Sunday morning.

I'm going to do a last minute overnight at Butano this weekend, so I can give a detailed report on water availability and fees when I return!

hi there. i just now read the description .... so am i reading correctly that there definitely isn't water to purify where we're camping and you're not sure, but think maybe there's water 15 minutes away? .... so we should pack water?

    thank you!

    May 28, 2013

    • Sara P.

You're reading that correctly. There is definitely not water right at the campsite. We might want to pack water for the entire trip :/ I will do my best to find out about the water source (a creek) about 15 mins walk away by the end of this weekend, 6/2. I've left a VM with the ranger's office, but haven't heard back.

    • kimberly

mmmm. thank you. i actually have 2 dogs! so i may cancel. let me contemplate. one of my dogs is 11 so having water available is pretty important. (it's only a weekend, but water is heavy!)

Yay! Matilda will be thrilled to have other dogs to hang out with :)

      May 28, 2013

    • Sara P.

Great, three dogs so far! They'll tire each other out if the hike itself doesn't do it.

I used to backpack quite a bit but have been out of circulation for about a year due to sciatica issues and I get altitude sickness. Physically I'm at a beginner level, but i really miss it so...

    May 27, 2013

    • Sara P.

Welcome, Nissa! We'll be taking it easy out there so the idea is for it to be enjoyable for everyone.
