Vogelsang Lake Loop - Yosemite National Park, Group 2

This is a second group making the same trip one day later.  This trip is limited to 8 people.  Only sign up if you're serious about making the trip, and remove your name promptly if you're not planning to attend so others can join.

From Lorraine's description ..

This is a three-day, 21-mile loop trip in the Tuolumne Meadows area of Yosemite National Park. We will visit Evelyn, Ireland, Upper Fletcher and Vogelsang Lakes, pass through the Vogelsang Lake High Sierra camp, and hike a portion of the John Muir/Pacific Crest trail. The trip will start with an overnight stay at a campground near the trailhead for altitude acclimatization purposes, then we'll spend two more nights on the trail. There are many backcountry campsites to choose from in this area so daily mileage will be flexible. High point is 10,600 feet and the overall elevation gain is 2300 feet.

This looks like it will be a really pretty trip, and probably a good one for anyone new to Sierra hiking. We're starting off fairly high (8500+ feet), but the overall elevation change is not a killer -- much less up up up than most hikes in that area. If you're interested in more details, most of the "100 best" hike books that cover Northern California have a description of this hike. Look for "Vogelsang Lake Loop" or "Vogelsang High Sierra Camp loop".

http://www.everytrail.com/guide/lyell-canyon-vogelsang-loop

Although the elevation gain is fairly moderate, this is not a beginner trip -- please sign on only if you've done at least a couple of trips of 2 or more nights.  Nights will be COLD so plan accordingly.

Bear canisters are required and can be rented at the wilderness center for $5.

Cost will come to about $15 per person: $5 per person for wilderness camping, $5 per person for the campground near the trailhead on night 1, and $5 for the bear canister if you don't already have one. Yellowstone also has an entrance fee of $25 per car (free for the whole car if someone in it has a park pass).

I will send all signups a confirmation email about three weeks before the trip. If I don't hear back from you within a week I will remove you from the RSVP list.

ps: Pay no attention to the 5PM start time on the 21st -- I had to pick a time but any time you can get there is fine. We'll be camping about 1.5 to 2 hours from the main Yosemite entrance along the Tioga Road on the first night. I'll check with the park office to make sure late arrivals are ok since some of us are likely to arrive well after dark.

Hi ladies! on the skype call there seemed to be a lot of question about who was riding with who and from where! I volunteered to synch people together into smaller groups. If you want to fill out the spreadsheet Isa made sometime this weekend I can organize it and group people together for carpools etc. The link again is:
    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AgFHSX740mzHdFlVYm1adW0zM3JWNU95c2U1WnA1eGc

if you can't access it for some reason just email me and I'll send you one that way that you can fill in.

I'd like to get this all organized by Sunday Evening.

    Talk to you soon!

    Hi All,
I don't have access to Skype to setup conference calls. However I can only take the call. Can some one else please set it up

Include me on Skype if you can.... [masked]

      September 10, 2012

  • Katie

How was the meeting yesterday?! I have clients until 5 p.m. tomorrow... Are we still planning on a skype call at 5? I'll be late but will try to make it!

    September 10, 2012

    • Anna M.

Katie, do you want to share a tent and Bare canister?

      September 10, 2012

  • Suzanne

Looking at the distances and timing it looks like being on the trail by 9 Saturday will work best .. maybe earlier depending on lightening patterns. We'll follow Lyell Fork 5-6 miles and then have a 2.8 mile climb. Aiming for Ireland Lake for the first night sounds pleasant - great views, private, lovely blue lake. That will be about 10 miles in. If the weather's inclement, however, we can camp a bit beyond the turnoff to Ireland Lake or lower as conditions dictate. Second night could be at one of a few places including: Townsley Lake, the north end of Vogelsang Lake or even around Boothe Lake / Tuolumne Pass. Our hike out will be 6-7 miles. ... TUESDAY'S CALL ... I cannot make the call at that time so can someone else organize it and then summarize and send notes?

    September 10, 2012

    • Anna M.

Sounds great, thank you for all the info.

At this point the trip is continuing. Let's keep a watch on the situation and be thinking of an interesting plan B alternative.

For Hantavirus updates at Yosemite please review the information at the Yosemite website - http://www.yosemitepark.com/hanta-virus.aspx, and follow news about incidents at Tuolumne Meadows.

  • sowmya

    Hello
I was meeting with a doc in Sf who mentioned about the huntavirus in Yosemite. Are you aware of this? I hope the area we are planning to go is not closed .

    September 9, 2012

  • Suzanne

I just got Teresa's voice mail indicating she has a cold and can't meet today - feel better Teresa. She's in Watsonville, hence the choice of Los Gatos for today's get-together. For consistency let's keep the meeting location today. Hope to see some of you there, then. And, since we all probably value connecting prior to the trip let's also arrange a Skype call on Tuesday. Sowmya and Teresa, can one of you set that up - I am triple booked that evening and can't join unless it's scheduled prior 5 pm.

    September 9, 2012

  • sowmya

Hello all I will not be able to make it as I'm stuck in sf.
If there is a Skype call on Tuesday I can definitely make it. If not I will sync up with you on the phone.

  • Suzanne

Just a friendly reminder that we're meeting today, Sunday, at 4 at the Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Co, 101 West Main Street, Los Gatos,[masked]-3263. I know Rebecca, Anna, and Katie can't join, but am hoping everyone else can. Please chime in to confirm.

Hi Everyone, since nothing is confirmed for a meeting today, could we do a Skype or conference call at 5 pm? If that doesn't work, how about sometime Tuesday?

    September 9, 2012

I would love to carpool with someone! I'm not planning to take Friday off but I can be all packed and ready and leave around 5pm. I live in Castro Valley.

Turns out that we are headed to San Carlos at 2 p.m. on Sunday, much earlier than I had though! I won't make it to this Sunday's get together but will be happy to meet any other day/time to catch up with a smaller group. Looking forward to the trip!

    Hi Suzanne,

I don't have a texting plan so I'm not getting your text messages. I think your idea of meeting this Sunday is great. Would Los Gatos work for everyone? It's a little closer for me coming from Watsonville.

    September 4, 2012

  • Suzanne

Hi all. Is there any interest in meeting this Sunday at 5 pm to chat, plan, look at maps? Thinking Mountain View or Sunnyvale would be good locations. Here's a starter idea - Red Rock coffee house this Sunday the 9th at 5 pm. Chime in please and suggest refinements on this idea if this isn't a good time / location. There are still spots left, so if you're thinking of going but not sure this may be a good time to feel it out.

    September 4, 2012

    • Katie

Sunday 5 p.m. Red Rocks works for me.

      September 4, 2012

I wasn't able to get Monday, Sept. 24th off of work and won't be able to join you for this trip.

    September 4, 2012

  • Katie

So I can take two more people. Mary and Teresa what time can you leave? on Friday?

    September 4, 2012

  • Katie

I can take 4 people total. Including myself. I may take Friday off and would like to leave in the early afternoon. I live in San Jose but would be happy to find a common meetup spot!

    September 1, 2012

    • Anna M.

Hi Katie, I hope I can still ride with you? I am taking Friday off as well, driving up from San Diego area. Text me or e-mail me so we can agree on lication. [masked]. [masked]

    August 30, 2012

  • Suzanne

So far Rebecca, Isa, Anna, Teresa, and Katie are confirmed. Mary and Heather, can you confirm that you're attending? Please consider carpooling. We're going to camp Friday night at the backpackers camp at Tuolumne Meadows Campground. I think Rebecca and I will be there around 7 pm if not earlier. I'll be wearing a flaming pink long-sleeved shirt and my cell is[masked]-8114. Can't wait!!

    August 30, 2012

  • Suzanne

Hi all. This looks like a great group of women and I'm looking forward to our backpacking trip. Just a friendly reminder that it's not too early to inventory your gear and make sure you have everything you'll need. Dig out those beanies, gloves, and long johns, and triple check that they're truly insulating. Since the overnight temps will be cold don't forget your sleep pad. I bought my topos today and am bringing a Steripen to purify water, along with iodine pills as backup. We can do a gear check the night before or the morning before we head into the wilderness. If you have any questions, ideas, thoughts send them to the group .. I suspect between us we have a good deal of knowledge about what works / doesn't for this type of trip.

    August 26, 2012

    • Isa

Suzanne, where did you get the topos ? Can you please point me to the right ones?

      August 29, 2012

Hi Isa. I found the Tuolumne Meadows and High Sierra Camp Loop by Tom Harrison Maps at REI.

I'm in Watsonville, but can travel to meet to join a carpool. I would prefer to pay for gas, but I can drive. I have a Camry. I'd also like to share a bear cannister if that is an option that's still open.
