This is a second group making the same trip one day later. This trip is limited to 8 people. Only sign up if you're serious about making the trip, and remove your name promptly if you're not planning to attend so others can join.
From Lorraine's description ..
This is a three-day, 21-mile loop trip in the Tuolumne Meadows area of Yosemite National Park. We will visit Evelyn, Ireland, Upper Fletcher and Vogelsang Lakes, pass through the Vogelsang Lake High Sierra camp, and hike a portion of the John Muir/Pacific Crest trail. The trip will start with an overnight stay at a campground near the trailhead for altitude acclimatization purposes, then we'll spend two more nights on the trail. There are many backcountry campsites to choose from in this area so daily mileage will be flexible. High point is 10,600 feet and the overall elevation gain is 2300 feet.
This looks like it will be a really pretty trip, and probably a good one for anyone new to Sierra hiking. We're starting off fairly high (8500+ feet), but the overall elevation change is not a killer -- much less up up up than most hikes in that area. If you're interested in more details, most of the "100 best" hike books that cover Northern California have a description of this hike. Look for "Vogelsang Lake Loop" or "Vogelsang High Sierra Camp loop".
Although the elevation gain is fairly moderate, this is not a beginner trip -- please sign on only if you've done at least a couple of trips of 2 or more nights. Nights will be COLD so plan accordingly.
Bear canisters are required and can be rented at the wilderness center for $5.
Cost will come to about $15 per person: $5 per person for wilderness camping, $5 per person for the campground near the trailhead on night 1, and $5 for the bear canister if you don't already have one. Yellowstone also has an entrance fee of $25 per car (free for the whole car if someone in it has a park pass).
I will send all signups a confirmation email about three weeks before the trip. If I don't hear back from you within a week I will remove you from the RSVP list.
ps: Pay no attention to the 5PM start time on the 21st -- I had to pick a time but any time you can get there is fine. We'll be camping about 1.5 to 2 hours from the main Yosemite entrance along the Tioga Road on the first night. I'll check with the park office to make sure late arrivals are ok since some of us are likely to arrive well after dark.
