"Hallucinations" by Oliver Sacks will be our first nonfiction book discussion - yay! Please bring questions, thoughts, comments - no formal presentations are necessary, but do expect to engage in some active listening and conversation. As always, dissenting opinions and thoughts are welcome, but I do expect participants to be respectful of each other as they express them.

Here's a short summary of the book:

"Hallucinations don’t belong wholly to the insane. Much more commonly, they are linked to sensory deprivation, intoxication, illness, or injury. People with migraines may see shimmering arcs of light. People with failing eyesight, paradoxically, may become immersed in a hallucinatory visual world. Hallucinations can be brought on by a simple fever or even the act of waking or falling asleep. In some conditions, hallucinations can lead to religious epiphanies or even the feeling of leaving one’s own body.

Here, with his usual elegance, curiosity, and compassion, Dr. Sacks weaves together stories of his patients and of his own mind-altering experiences to illuminate what hallucinations tell us about the organization and structure of our brains, how they have influenced every culture’s folklore and art, and why the potential for hallucinations is present in us all, a vital part of the human condition."

Now let's get to readin'!

Suggested Donation: $2/attendee

As stated in my profile, I'm a broke-ass grad student, and Meetup groups cost money to run (surprise!), so... if you can contribute a buck or two, please do! This increases the likelihood that I can continue this group despite my rotten budget. If you can't, don't sweat it! It wouldn't really be fair to exclude other broke-asses. If there are extra funds from donations over the year (i.e., if the amount collected exceeds the cost of the Meetup, which is $144/year), then I will use the remaining funds for something fun for the group, like drinks/snacks for a holiday get together at the year's end.

A little note on RSVPs: If you have to cancel (life happens sometimes), please do so at least 24 hours in advance. That way space can be freed up for others who may wish to attend, but for whom there wasn't enough room. If you RSVP "yes" and don't show up 3 times (yes, I will be counting!), you will be excluded from future attendance. This is only fair for others who want to attend the meetings.

Great coffee and great company today. The venue, Café 389, is really nice. I'm already thinking up my list of suggestions for the next books.

I have to cancel because I couldn't get the book from the library in time! I've been on the wait list for a month, but no luck! I waited this late because I would have read it in one night if I had to... but no dice. So sorry, see you at the next one

I plan to but have not received an announcement?

I finally figured out how to announce it (rrf, the meetup interface annoys me). In the future, you can just check out the upcoming meetups - if it's listed, consider it to be happening.
