Mokelumne River, Spring 2014

  • May 9, 2014 · 2:30 PM
  • Salt Springs trailhead

A warm-up medium long, 2-nights backack in Mokelumne wilderness. 6 miles from Salt Springs dam by trail, then another 2 mi by what I still call a "trail", by most other folks don't. Hike is about 3 hours total with good pace. Make a base camp there and take a long day hike up the river next day.

The Spring has already sprung in the area, will be lots of flowers - and wild animals, too: this is a State Game Refuge AND is below the snow line, everyone unwilling to hibernate comes down there in winter!

Time posted is at the trailhead, ~4:20 drive from Bay Area. Ellis Road, off hwy 88, is paved up to the trailhead, but watch for potholes.

The unanticipated "fun" - fork lifting the scared doggy over the rocks - bumped this trip rating up to "difficult". After such an exhausting exercise, the planned day hike got reduced to leisure meadow walks, to Satori's delight. On Sunday, the weather changed to windy, cold and clear; the hike back was equally exhausting, but still pleasant. Have taken a bunch of photos, but cannot upload them until my DSL gets fixed. Thank you, Peggy, for making this trip and being such a pleasant company!

My home internet is still down: after 5pm, I am incommunicado other than by phone. Setting RSVP deadline 24h ahead to avoid last minute misses.

    Hi Alex,

I am interested in this trip but, so far, you have managed to schedule it for weekends that I am out of the state!

Let me know if you reschedule: third time is the charm, right?

Jane, will May 3-5 work for you? On Fri 2-nd, I might be out of town...

I'll be in Cincinnati. So much for third times! Thanks for trying Alex.

Alex, what is your Dinkey canyon route? I might try that Thursday-Saturday w my family? I grew up in Fresno, but never backpacked in Dinkey Lakes Wilderness.

It's posted; take a look... IMO, this is not for a family trip, though. Better go Kings River.

For weather conditions, this trip is being replaced by a shorter one, Sat-Sun to Dinkey Canyon, - to be posted later today. Mokelumne is still too good to cancel altogether. Will try to squeeze it between others, - tentatively, on May 9-11. The dates can be negotiated between Fri-Sun and Sat-Mon, accommodating to personal schedules.

Given the lack of interest and weather concerns, this trip will be cancelled. Instead, I will be going on a Sat-Sun adventure in Sierra NF, either Dinkey Creek or Kings River area. Anyone willing to join, let me know, - I can post it.

    Hi Scott,
I cannot take Thursday off, sorry.
Thanks for the heads-up on weather: some more rain is certainly brewing, centered on Friday. Going down South on Sat will be a better chance to avoid it. Since there was so little interest in this trip, I am going to scuttle it.

    the 9pm Sunday SF forecast.:

"THE MEDIUM RANGE MODELS HAVE DEFINITELY BEEN TRENDING FASTER WITH
THE SYSTEM AT THE END OF THE WEEK. THE GFS...ECMWF...AND GEM
MODELS ALL SPREAD RAIN ACROSS MOST OF OUR DISTRICT ON THURSDAY
NIGHT AND FRIDAY. BUT RAINFALL INTENSITY VARIES...WITH THE GFS BEING
THE WETTEST AND THE ECMWF THE DRIEST. THERE IS ALSO DISAGREEMENT
REGARDING A SECOND SYSTEM THAT COMES IN OVER THE WEEKEND. THE
ECMWF SWEEPS LIGHT AMOUNTS OF RAIN ACROSS MOST OF OUR AREA ON
SATURDAY NIGHT...WHILE THE GFS AND CANADIAN MODELS CONFINE WARM
ADVECTION RAIN MAINLY TO THE NORTH BAY ON SUNDAY BEFORE BUILDING
IN AN UPPER RIDGE. THEREFORE...CONSIDERABLE UNCERTAINTY EXISTS
LATE IN THE EXTENDED FORECAST PERIOD...ALTHOUGH THERE DOES APPEAR
TO BE A GOOD CHANCE THAT MOST OF OUR AREA WILL GET WET WITH THAT
    FIRST SYSTEM ON FRIDAY."

Hey Alex, I've been thinking about a 2-night trip with my son and wife starting on Thursday coming out on Saturday (it's his Spring Break). Your trip sounds interesting, but a day later than I'd like. Any suggestions? and what do you make of the weather for this weekend? I see likelihood of rain, but haven't figured out if further south would be dry. (Second post commig with the 9pm Sunday SF forecast.)

Weekend of 12-13 observations: there is lots of fresh snow above 5000' in the area. Ellis Road is sure to get some, too. Pushing the date one week down to let it thaw, thus giving another chance to anyone who is homebound by Easter.

Hmm, this is an intriguing locale. Easter will trump my desire to explore it though.
