I've been backpacking for over thirty years, mostly in the Sierras. Well, I did do 300 miles of backpacking in New Zealand in one three-month period, but that was the exception.
Well, the Coastal Range is great even when the snow is still deep up in the Sierras. This year's snowpack means even the lower range near, say, Hetch Hetch will still be pretty tough until June or so.

I did four backpacks last year; the longest being about an 80-miler in Kings Canyon — the Rae Lakes Loop, with quite a few side trips. I'm hoping/planning to do the John Muir Trail this year.
