Jane Austen (of course), Edith Wharton, John Galsworthy, Somerset Maugham, some Henry James (I prefer his shorter works, like the "The Turn of the Screw" and "The Aspern Papers"), John Fowles, Iris Murdoch.
I've never tackled "Ivanhoe" (or anything by Walter Scott) but recently heard it highly recommended. "Lorna Doone"
