Please get you tix ASAP. Deal is only temporary just like all other discounts offers we had! Many thanks to Joan who found out about this!:) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You might have seen my event posting for Opera Marriage of Figaro... Yeah, then all of a sudden it disappeared and found no trace, right? Well, b/c i wasn't having a good karma w/ Figaro(That ruthless man!!), i had to cancel the event. But wait, this doesn't mean i am backing out on other exciting opera events for the season. It just hasn't begun on the right foot, that's all. Ok, getting down to the bottom line: What about Puccini's Madama Butterfly?? Details are as below:
Madama Butterfly
San Francisco Opera The great tragic love story returns in a classic new-to-San Francisco production by Broadway legend Harold Prince (Sweeney Todd, The Phantom of the Opera). Svetla Vassileva sings the title role in October, a young Japanese geisha who falls for a charismatic but callous American sailor (tenor Stefano Secco). The Times of London praised the soprano’s "beautifully free and unencumbered voice…capable of the most intimate pianissimo but also riding the whole orchestra with ease." Daniella Dessì, a singer praised by Opera News for her “penetrating, extravagant, unabashedly emotional” voice, sings the title role for November performances. Prince's staging, created for Lyric Opera of Chicago and infused with touches of traditional Japanese theater, "remains one of the most beautiful in Lyric’s repertory" (Opera News). Music Director Nicola Luisotti "mixes Puccini’s colors strongly and fearlessly, so that the collision of East and West is even more menacing than Puccini knew" (The Times of London). Venue: War Memorial Opera House Date: October 29,[masked]:00 PM City: San Francisco Price Range: $60 and up Tickets: (415)[masked] *As of now(9/24) there are still seats available @$60 the cheapest (Yes, it's A-cast performance incl. Daniella Dessi), and if we get enough number of people, i think we can get group discount (15% off if 10 or more; 30% off if 30 or more). But we need to act quickly since tix are selling like crazy... based on my experience w/ Figaro! So, let me know ASAP!
Pre-meetup:
@ 6p
Bodega Bistro(Vietnamese/French) 607 Larkin St. (Eddy St.) San Francisco, CA 94109. Phone:[masked] Website: www.bodegabistrosf.com It's within walking distance from opera house. So, we'll hop over together after dinner.
Let me know if you are coming to dinner on your rsvp. Thanks.

i am a novice in opera. M.B. is my 1st official opera w/ full pledge in mind that i 'd get to know opera, the musical genre that i haven't gotten myself into yet. And yes indeed it was a wonderful experience. Perfect length, and libretto(though in translation) was easy to understand. A little regret that i forgot a box of kleenex... never expected i'd cry among weeping crowd twd the end!!!:) Awesome time schmoozing w/ members at pre-meetup dinner: Thanx for prompt arrival to dinner despite the bad weather, workday hassle plus my belated arrival as event host... duhh!:) Hope you made to pre-opera talk as planned. It was really nice meeting/mingling w/ members during intermission. Yup, that wasn't enough right?? Party went on! Had an impromptu post-meetup @ Mel's Diner to extend our joy of gathering. Chatted about MB's status if her situation happened 21st century... heard variety! Well, thanx for sharing wonderful time together & see you @ next round!:)

Edie - The pre-opera talk is held in the same location as the opera. You can sit anywhere you want, even the first row of Orchestra.

    October 26, 2010

  • Edie

Thanks Erika, for clarifying how people dress for the opera in SF. Anybody have any information on the pre-opera talk? Do we go to the same assigned seats as for the opera or is the talk held in another location?

i semi-dressed up for Faust this summer @ sfopera. In fact none of us wore jeans, but all dressed up nicely. See our pic's in June!:)

    October 7, 2010

  • Edie

Thank you for clarifying the date of the event. Yuri, no need to apologize. I'm really glad we're going on a night when there's hi-def Operavision because it looks like I'll be enjoying it from the balcony with you. By the way, what does one wear to the San Francisco Opera? I went to a SF Ballet performance all dressed up and looked terribly out of place among all the people in jeans. Is the opera in SF just as casual?

    October 6, 2010

  • Yuri

    Edie,
Yeah, it is my fault. It was originally set for Nov. 5, but I told her about OperaVision and made her shift a week ahead. Sorry for the confusion. :( It would be good to see you there, though!

Hi Dave, Welcome back! Hope no more jet lag for u!!:) i think pre-opera talk sounds wonderful, but that won't leave much time to grab a bite for folks coming straight from work. Yup, it's Friday opera... So, maybe some of us can make it if not feeling rushed. i will ask folks at dinner. Thanks for finding out for us!:)
