THE GOURMET FUN STUFF

  • Farm-to-fork and lakeside tasting dinner with Renaissance Vineyard & Winery
  • Tour & tasting of award-winning olive oils
  • Discussion & tasting with winemakers Grant & Eddie

THE PLAN

FRIDAY: EVENING ARRIVAL
Tasting: Grant & Eddie Winery

Welcome to Yuba! Meet at 5:30pm and head to the mountaintop for an informal wine reception. Discuss the itinerary and watch the sunset.

SATURDAY: BUTTES, WINE & OLIVE OIL
Hike: Sutter Buttes or Table Mountain Nature Trek
6-9 miles • Moderate difficulty: rolling to mountainous terrain
Tasting: Renaissance Vineyard or Clos Saron

Depending on the conditions we'll hike either the Sierra Buttes or Table Mountain this morning. The Sierra Buttes are scenic alpine buttes with vast views of the canyons, rivers and mountain lakes below. Table Mountain, an elevated basalt mesa with beautiful vistas of spring wildflowers, waterfalls, lava outcrops, and a rare type of vernal pool, was created by ancient lava flows. We'll enjoy a picnic lunch on grassy hill under the shade of the silvery oak trees. Pass around fresh-baked bread, artisan cheeses and local sun-ripened fruit. It doesn’t get much better than this!

After our hike, we'll head home for showers and a bit of time to relax.

Then……dinner!!! Prepare for an amazing 4-course extravaganza of local delicacies, all expertly prepared by a talented and passionate local chef. Think homemade cheeses, locally-raised meats, home-baked bread, organic garden veggies, wild greens and more. From appetizer to dessert you’ll get a true feeling of what north Yuba has to offer.
And then the wine!! The dinner expertly paired with local Renaissance wines. They've agreed to let us dig deep into their cellar (!) and select some of their rare aged bottles to match our meal. We'll be able to look out over their vineyards as we taste - a real local experience.

SUNDAY: OLIVE OIL & ART
Tasting: Apollo Olive Oil or Sierra d'Oro

After a breakfast of croissants, fresh fruit, coffee & tea, we'll head to the beautiful hillside olive orchards of Apollo Olive Oil. The press operator and manager will show us their trees, mill, and press followed by an explanation of olive oil tasting, with a flight of mild to spicy blends. Then we'll head to the bejeweled house of a local artist - her fanciful, colorful paintings are an unusual delight and a fun way to conclude our wild weekend!

PRICING

We got an amazing deal on this trip. Normally, doing all these events would either a) not be possible because our hosts are real farmers/craftsmen and don't generally have time to entertain, or b) would come out to be much more expensive. However, we were able to score 5 gourmet meals, including 2 wine-tasting dinners and and 1 olive oil tasting, 2 nights lodging and 1 hike for:

... $219 camping (bring your own gear)
... $249 in rustic cabins by lake (bunk in 4 person room - bring your own sheets)
... $295 in charming Bed & Breakfast

This includes virtually everything:

  • Gourmet Meals:
    • 2 breakfasts
    • 1 gourmet picnic lunch
    • 2 dinners (a wine-reception/light dinner $45 value; and a 4-course chef's wine-tasting dinner $85 value) 2 breakfasts
  • 2 Nights Accommodation

If you can't do the listed price, you can try and find your own accommodations, but the closest hotel is about 60 miles away and you'd miss out on a breakfast of fresh croissants delivered to your door every morning and the sweetness of your rural hosts.
