Kayaking ... We're Back!
This will be a 4 hour self-guided tour of the Elkhorn Slough. Beginners are welcome!!
Why do we drive to Moss Landing instead of kayaking closer to home? Four simple reasons: 1) it's a great and relaxing day trip, 2) you see more wildlife than in Oakland, 3) the price is better - it covers four hours instead of two, and 4) the meal at Phil's Seafood is ah-MAA-zing! Here are the logistics: Our time begins with a little mini-lesson by one of the managers. If you do not have your own kayak, then you can rent a single for $35, or a double for $50 ($25/per person) for 4 hours. Pssst! Here's the big secret ... you can arrange to kayak down as far as you'd like and, for $15 extra, they will send a boat to pick you up! (Not a requirement, but a pretty cool option.) You can kayak in one direction! No more pushing into the wind and the current on your return.
Included in the low price
Boat skirts and wet suit are included. In order to make a reservation for a kayak, you need to call[masked]-5692. We will meet at 12:00 p.m. and then process the rental paperwork (for those renting), and plan on leaving shortly thereafter for a 4 hour paddle. Please RSVP reserve your kayak with Kayak Connection, and then email me to indicate your reservation. If you need to change your RSVP to a "no," please cancel by Sept 5th. You are otherwise subject to a 50% penalty.
Instead of commenting about carpools in your RSVP, please indicate whether or not you would like to carpool in the "discussion" for this event. (Most people don't read the RSVP notes.) Most of us participate in carpools in going to this event as parking is limited. Please indicate if you are willing to be a driver for the event, or if you would like to ride with someone in the discussion section below. It has become a tradition for us to do a group dinner at Phil's Restaurant in Moss Landing - about 1.5 miles from Kayak Connection. Our group members typically comment that the meal alone is worth the drive! Located on the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, 0.5 miles from Moss Landing, the Elkhorn Slough has been described in the San Francisco Chronicle as the best place for wildlife viewing along the length of California Highway 1. The wildlife are awesome! You should be able to see the otters, sea lions, seals, pelicans, and various other birds. This spot is home to freshwater, saltwater and marshland wildlife. During migration season (spring and fall) you would see plenty of shore birds and waterfowl. You can also view photos from the March 27th, 2011 event. This should give some indication of the spectacular scenery! RSVPs are being accepted as of Aug 17th!
