Undiscovered Gourmet: Hiking Yuba Weekend

This Valentine's Day, escape to the Old World without ever leaving California! Only a few hours drive from the Bay, the North Yuba foothills boast some of California's most distinguished terroir wines, world‐class olive oils, Italian chefs, breathtaking nature trails and many of the nicest people you'll ever meet. This two night getaway offers the perfect blend of intimacy, excitement and gourmet delight, all at an unbeatable price!

Undiscovered Gourmet is a project envisioned by local food-lovers Gabe and Laura who grew up in the back-country of California, between the Central Valley and Sierra Mountains. Now they want to share their unique experiences living and loving among California's passionate small-farm community.

Chef's Wine-Tasting Dinner featuring farm-fresh local produce, artisan cheeses, grass-fed meats, wild greens, award-winning wines and world-class olive oils - all local, all organic!

* Four course Farm-to-Fork dinner, all locally sourced!

*Taste award‐winning wines and chat with the local vintners!

*Scenic walks through hilltop vineyards and orchards!

* Tour & tasting with award winning olive oils!

* Tour & tasting with local honey and cheese artisans, learning about beehives and cheese cultures!

*Cozy accommodations, from rustic lakeside cabins to elegant Bed & Breakfasts!

Welcome to the Sierra Foothills! Catch the sunset over the valley as you wind your way up into North Yuba county! The informal reception will last from 5 to 7pm, so show up whenever you can get here. There will be drinks and food waiting for you upon arrival! The grub (and wine) will be provided by the vendors on the upcoming tour, so you can get a sneak peek at the flavors that await your weekend!

After we get to know each other a bit, we'll go over the itinerary and get some background on the agricultural intrigue of the region. We are working to line up some live music to take the party up a notch, but your Bed & Breakfast or cabin awaits you whenever you feel it’s time to turn in!

8-10 Sleep in/French breakfast and coffee at lodging

We begin our adventure with a visit to hillside olive orchards of Apollo Olive Oil. The owners will show us their trees, mill, and press followed by an explanation of olive oil tasting, with a flight of mild to spicy blends. These olive oils are the real deal, award-winning artisan varieties, full of complex flavor and packed with antioxidants (check out this article!). Make sure to grab a bottle or two for the kitchen or for classy gifts!

As we get ready for lunch, why not some wines to whet the appetite? The kind folks over at Grant-Eddie Winery have agreed to meet us at our hilltop picnic spot and pour some of their award winning varieties. Grant and Eddie have combined their skills to produce intense, elegant, terroir wines that eloquently speak volumes of the potentials hidden within the rough soils of Yuba county. Pick up a bottle to share with your folks back home ;)

Time for lunch! If the warm winter weather holds up, we’ll stop at the top of the vineyard and and have a picnic lunch while we soak in the scenery. Pass around fresh-baked bread, artisan cheeses and local sun-ripened fruit. It doesn’t get much better than this!

Take an hour to walk through the terraces before we head out to Clos Saron for another tasting!

You’ll fall in love with wine-expert Gideon and his small, charming permaculture vineyard (his flock of geese mow the lawn and fertilize the vines!). Clos Saron prides itself on the fact that its grapes are crushed within 20 minutes from the time they are harvested and bottled manually, directly from barrel.

Okay, that’s enough wine for now. Rest up for an hour or two before the Farm to Fork dinner party at Hickman Family Vineyards!

Prepare for an amazing 4-course extravaganza of local delicacies, all expertly prepared by a talented and passionate local chef. Think homemade cheeses, locally-raised meats, home-baked bread, organic garden veggies, wild greens and more. From appetizer to dessert you’ll get a true feeling of what North Yuba has to offer.

And then the wine!! The dinner expertly paired with local wines. The Hickman’s have agreed to let us dig deep into their cellar (!) and select some of their rare aged bottles to match our meal. We'll be able to look out over their vineyards as we taste - a real local experience.

Sunday morning feel free to sleep in or get up early and take a walk around the local duck pond while sipping your coffee. Once again, a French breakfast awaits you at your lodging if you’re up for it!

We conclude our adventure with a cheese and honey tasting! We will meet with a local apiarist to taste a full spectrum of honeys gathered from our local flora and learn about the art of beekeeping. The honeys available include everything from plums to starthistle! This is accompanied by a variety of artisan cheeses -from gouda to goat! Talk about a SWEET (and healthy) way to end the weekend!

For those of you who aren't quite ready to break your bonds with the area, we recommend you stop by one of several other tasting rooms on your way out. If it's not a return trip to Hickman Family Vineyard or Clos Saron, try Renaissance Vineyard and Winery. Founded in 1978, Renaissance wines are best known for their uncompromising expression of terroir and distinctive style. The winemaker handcrafts estate-bottled wines in a traditional European style. After 30 years of extensive experimentation, Renaissance now focuses on limited production of the Bordeaux and Rhone families of varietals.

Itinerary disclaimer: This itinerary gives an outline of our activities on the tour, however, our itinerary may be subject to change due to weather conditions, availability of suppliers or other unforeseeable events. We are, however, driven to create the best experience possible for you and any changes made will be with the aim to improve your experience.

Special Valentine's Day Deal!!! Normally, doing all these events would either (a) not be possible because our hosts are real farmers/craftsmen and don't generally have time to entertain (even now, I still have to beg many of them just to show up to share the products they work so hard to produce!) or (b) would come out to be much more expensive. Pricing depends on accommodation choice:

CAMPING ... $209 - Bring your own gear and please arrive at least 1 hour early (by 4:30pm) to set up your tent.

RUSTIC CABIN ... $239 - Stay on a bunk in a 4-person room in rustic cabins by lake. Bring your own sheets & blankets.

BED & BREAKFAST ROOM ... $285 - Stay in beautiful fully-furnished room in lovely homes. Price based on double occupancy. B&B accommodations are very limited, so please reserve these early.

* Gourmet Meals, including

- 2 breakfasts

- 1 gourmet picnic lunch

- 2 dinners (a wine-reception/light dinner $45 value; and a  4-course chef's wine-tasting dinner $85 value)

* Accommodation for 2 nights

* Activities, including wine-tasting, olive oil tour and tasting, hikes, and more.

If you can't do the listed price, you can try and find your own accommodations, but the closest hotel is about 60 miles away and you'd miss out on a breakfast of fresh croissants delivered to your door every morning and the sweetness of your rural hosts.

Reservations and $50 deposit are required. It is not enough to rsvp yes on meetup. Please sign up here: Accommodation is tricky to organize in the Yuba, and we need an accurate head count to plan for the big dinner (aka basically nothing exists) so we can’t reserve a room or prepare meals for you if we don't have notice that you're coming! Thanks!!!!

This was a phenomenal weekend in every respect. Thank you Laura and Gabe for putting it together. It was no small matter to coordinate so many activities and people. You did a great job. I'm going to be talking about this trip for a long time.

Laura and Gabe are the consummate hosts! Beyond the delectable events that were just as described in the event page, Gabe went out of his way to lead folks on the dark, winding roads to the cabin by the lake, and escort lasses back after a night of imbibing. Laura prepared the perfect French breakfasts with fresh-brewed coffee, raw yogurt and to-die-for crossaints. Most of all, everyone, from the wine/olive/cheese/honey artisans to the musicians to the B&B proprietors to the meetup folks, shared of themselves, and that made for the magical weekend! Thanks again, L&G!

This sounds so nice, but I don't think next weekend is going to work for me at this time. I hope you do it again in the spring or summer. (especially the part where we would get to go pet some lambs, they are too cute) Enjoy.

How much is B&B for one person?

    January 24, 2014

    • Gabe P.

It's the same price as listed plus around $20 bucks, just because of how we have to juggle around lodging! But if you're looking to save, the cabins are pretty awesome...

      January 24, 2014

  • Juliet J.

This is wonderful! We're looking forward to staying in the single occ. B&B and enjoying the weekend.

Bummer to miss this one again, but alas, I've made other plans to be out of town. I was signed up on the last one that got canceled. Hope to make the next one!

Laura! I'm so sorry to hear that. This is sure to be the best one yet too. Any way you could, ummm, rearrange your plans? Haha, if not, no worries there are bound to be more if we can pull this one off!

Hi, this sounds like a fantastic weekend. I've been watching your outings for a while and I think this one might work out. My girlfriend is trying to get the time off work. I'll RSVP when it is confirmed but I wanted to let you know we are interested. Can't wait to meet you guys!

Hi Gabe, I'd say we are moderate hikers. Stephanie is more of a walker, not very experienced with trails but is getting out more and more over time, and she is in good shape. However, the promise of good food afterward has an amazing effect on her enthusiasm and energy level. :) If others want to do an extension or split off for something more aerobic, we are happy to hang out and read or do whatever and regroup later. It is all an adventure so no worries.

      1 · January 15, 2014

    • Gabe P.

That's right Michael! It's all an adventure! Check out the updated itinerary, the hike has turned into a stroll through hilltop wine terraces (weather providing, of course). Let me know as soon as Stephanie gives the thumbs up. You have a pretty excellent selection of BnB's at this point!

"More than half of the olive oil imported into the US is considered substandard. But the stuff that makes the cut, is almost more medicine that food!" Another great article about the health benefits of true extra virgin olive oils like the ones we have out here in the North Yuba!
