Splish-Splash Kayak Bash!

We're back ... Kayaking Continued! We are on our way back to Kayak Connection in the Monterey area.

This will be a 4 hour self-guided tour of the Elkhorn Slough. Beginners are welcome!!

Why?
Why do we drive to Moss Landing instead of kayaking closer to home? Four simple reasons: 1) it's a great and relaxing day trip, 2) you see more wildlife than in Oakland, 3) the price is better - it covers four hours instead of two, and 4) the meal at Phil's Seafood is ah-MAA-zing! Here are the logistics: Our time begins with a little mini-lesson by one of the managers. If you do not have your own kayak, then you can rent a single for $35, or a double for $55 ($27.50/per person) for 4 hours.

Covered in the Cost
All accessory gear: spray skirts, PDFs, paddles, wetsuits if desired are included in the cost. In order to make a reservation for a kayak, you need to call [masked]. We will meet at 12:00 p.m. and then process the rental paperwork (for those renting), and plan on leaving shortly thereafter for a 4 hour paddle. Please RSVP reserve your kayak with Kayak Connection, and then email Nash and DK to indicate your reservation. Official cancellation policy is “for rentals if the renter calls at any time prior to the reservation to cancel, there will be no charge. If we are turning other business away to hold a reservation that does not show or call to cancel then we will charge them in full.” I suggest any cancellation should be by June 13th to ensure the meetup group does not turn away others, and to ensure you are not being charged.

Carpools
Instead of commenting about carpools in your RSVP, please indicate whether or not you would like to carpool in the "discussion" for this event. (Most people don't read the RSVP notes.) Most of us participate in carpools in going to this event as parking is limited. Please indicate if you are willing to be a driver for the event, or if you would like to ride with someone in the discussion section below. It has become a tradition for us to do a group dinner at Phil's Restaurant in Moss Landing - about 1.5 miles from Kayak Connection. Our group members typically comment that the meal alone is worth the drive!

Location
Located on the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, 0.5 miles from Moss Landing, the Elkhorn Slough has been described in the San Francisco Chronicle as the best place for wildlife viewing along the length of California Highway 1. The wildlife are awesome! You should be able to see the otters, sea lions, seals, pelicans, and various other diving birds. This spot is home to freshwater, saltwater and marshland wildlife. During migration season (spring and fall) you would see plenty of shore birds and waterfowl.

RSVPs are currently being accepted. Please sign up for the wait list, call Kayak Connection to make your reservation and send Nash and DK an email. You will be added to the confirmed list the same week. This is a popular place - and you will soon understand why! Call Kayak Connection for the "Nash Event" and make your reservation today: [masked].

That was a lot of fun! Thanks for hosting DK. It was nice to meet you, Christine and Cindy. Pics to come.

For the rest of you, you missed out - in a big way. The day was perfect, the wildlife unbelievable (humpback whales, dolphins, otters, sea lions, seals, big jellies and tons of birds), the sunset spectacular and the company outstanding.

I uploaded pictures yesterday; I took only few while on the water -- trying to keep the kayak straight ;-)
Juliet & Christine, I'm sure you took fantastic pictures, please share :-)

    Hi Christi,
I will try to arrange another trip in either August or September. I have been going for years and never saw a whale or dolphins as the water is not very deep. (How exciting to get that little treat!) The good is that the sea otters, sea lions, pelicans, jelly fish, diving birds, seals, etc. - they are always there in abundance. I will try to keep you posted with something in the next couple of weeks. Thanks to those who took photos!

Just to clarify, the wales and dolphins were about 1/4 mile off of the Moss Landing shore, not in the Elkhorn Slough. The whales (estimated between 70 - 150, though we only saw about 15) were feeding on the anchovies. News of the whales hit the local press and some reports say they are now coming within 20' of the shore to feed. If you have the time, it's worth the trip just to sit on the beach and watch the mammal life.

Thanks for the extra info. Would love to have seen the special visitors - and wish I had been able to connect with all of you. I hope some of you might be open to returning in Aug or Sept.

Thanks DK, Frank, and everyone for your participation! Sorry to miss but delighted you all had such a great time!

    Thanks Everyone, Great Day !

  • Steve C

Hi All. Unfortunately I can't make it today. I look forward to next time.

    July 19, 2014

  • Cindy

    Hi DK,
Can I ride with you? If so, where should we meet in SF? I can take the first Bart from union city to embarcdero at 6:46am. Or is there some else also provide a ride just for the kayak?

    July 16, 2014

    • Cindy

I am a beginner. If you do't mind, I do like to seat with you.

      July 17, 2014

    • DK

Sure, you can take the seat in my kayak. Thanks for the email that you'll be at Civic Center BART at the corner of Hyde St at 7:10. It's going to be a beautiful day.

      July 18, 2014

  • DK

In exchange for a post-kayaking Ahi & Beer at Phil's I could be convinced to offer one seat in my inflatable kayak to the first lucky participant weighing <170lbs :-)
Full disclosure: if it is windy paddling this kayak can take a little more finesse than a low-cut hard shell.

Dear All, I will have an emergency work deadline on Saturday and will be unable to come. I normally confirm those on the waitlist after kayaks are reserved so that you do not arrive and there are not kayaks available. (I've seen it happen before!) However, those who would like to go are STRONGLY encouraged to call and reserve your kayaks unless you have your own kayak. There is no way to confirm you have a kayak unless you call and make that confirmation. If you think you can assist with managing the meetup on Saturday (take attendance and collect the $1/each person), please let me know.
The team is fantastic and beginners and seasoned kayakers should all have a great time!

    • Frank

Christi - me +1 are absolutely going no matter the situation, so by all means make the reservation and join us (if that's the case). In fact, I just got off of the phone with a friend that reserved a double kayak and that is another 2 people who will join us (he is just having problems with his Meetup ID). It also appears that DK is going, so with you that makes it a minimum of six.

      July 16, 2014

    • DK

I'm fine with collecting the fee. Glad to see there are committed people signed up. Would be great if all who are now on the RSVP list could confirm here that they are coming so we have an actual count.

      July 16, 2014

  • DK

I offer up to three people a ride from San Francisco. I plan to leave SF around 7 am to explore the Elkhorn Slough visitor center in the morning before kayaking to learn about the ecosystem.
They also give a 1-2 hour tour at 10am, one can leave anytime to drive the 10 minutes to the kayak landing when it's time.

  • Evelyne G

Sorry I was on the waiting list until today. I have now other plans for the weekend. But i'm still interested in kayaking another weekend!

    July 16, 2014

  • Cindy

    Hi everyone,
I will join the kayak event. I wound if I can carpool with someone. I live in Fremont, but I can meet the ride at a location preferred by the driver. Please let me know. Thanks. Cindy

    July 16, 2014

  • Nash

P.S. I forgot to mention that we have a $1 meetup fee when we come. It's intended to off-set the costs for using the website.

    July 13, 2014

  • Nash

Hi Cindy, Do you have your own kayak? If not just reserve your kayak and then send me an email. You will be confirmed for either reserving or letting me know you are bringing your own kayak. Looking forward to meeting you! Nash

    July 13, 2014

  • Cindy

    Hi Nash,
Can I make it on the 19th or have to wait for the next time? Cindy

    July 13, 2014

  • Nash

There's no cost if you bring your own kayak. You can rent a wet suit if you like.

    July 1, 2014

  • Nash

Hi DK, The $35 price is all inclusive.

    June 13, 2014

    • DK

i just bought a kayak, so if i understand it right there won't be any costs then?

      June 30, 2014

  • Nash

Dear All, if you previously waited listed to go kayaking for our June 14th date, I deleted your name to allow you to sign up for the new date if you would like to. Please join the wait list, make your reservation, and then send me an email that you have confirmed. I will add you to the "yes" list so that I have an accurate head count. We are limited to 20 rentals. If you have your own kayak, please let me know that as well. Can't wait to see everyone!

    June 28, 2014

  • Steve C

I'm wondering why there is a wait list when it only shows 1 going?

    June 27, 2014

    • Steve C

Hi Nash. I have my own kayak so didn't make a reservation for one. I've never been to Elkhorn Slough though. Is the water fairly calm?

      June 28, 2014

    • Nash

Hi Steve, It is calm which is why I highly recommend it for first timers. There appears to be a technical glitch regarding my updating the list. Once we get that resolved, I will add you to the "confirmed" group. Glad you are coming!!

      June 28, 2014

  • Nash

Please note: the address is 2370 California Route 1. I am having trouble with the editing but will try again tomorrow and will also delete all the "wait list" so people can sign up for the new date as they wish.

    June 14, 2014

  • Nash

Greetings All! I think we'll try the trip another time when we have a few more people. The system usually sends email to me but did not this time, so my responses were a little slow. (My apologies!) If Kelly sees this, my apologies. There are a few going from another meetup group and I would have asked you meet us, but I could not locate your information either. Please join next time - it would be great to meet you!

    June 13, 2014

  • DK

The $35 price includes the kayak rental or is this in addition (i.e. a commercial event)? Thx

    May 31, 2014

  • Nash

Greetings, Those who want a spot, please call Kayak Connection to make the reservation and then send me an email. I will move you up to "confirmed" right away!! Can't wait to meet everyone and start arranging those carpools.

    May 19, 2014

  • Nash

Greetings Kelly! I'm ready to give you your spot! Call Kayak Connection to make your reservation and then shoot me an email. Can't wait to meet you! Welcome to Alameda and to the Bay Area! Thanks for joining our group!
