An Oversimplification of Her Beauty at the Roxie

AN OVERSIMPLIFICATION OF HER BEAUTY

AN OVERSIMPLIFICATION OF HER BEAUTY

Rated: NR    Runtime: 84 mins.

AN OVERSIMPLIFICATION OF HER BEAUTY
Executive producers Jay-Z, Dream Hampton, and Wyatt Cenac present Terence Nance’s explosively creative debut feature, AN OVERSIMPLIFICATION OF HER BEAUTY. With arresting insight, vulnerability, and a delightful sense of humor, the film documents the relationship between Terence and a lovely young woman as it teeters on the divide between platonic and romantic. Utilizing a tapestry of live action and multiple styles of animation, the film blurs the line between narrative, documentary, and experimental film as it explores the fantasies, emotions, and memories that race through Terence’s mind as he examines and re-examines a singular moment in time.

Stars Terence Nance & Namik Minter. Dir: Terence Nance. Featuring original music by Flying Lotus! 2012. Digital. 84 mins.

The film was mainly narrated and had few lines of dialogue, which could make it a bit tiresome. The animation was clever. The way the women were drawn tall and large and how he was becoming smaller and smaller in their presence until he was a baby in fetal position, to me was symbolic and interesting. The film's message about relationships and a young man's perception and actions in a relationship was thought provoking for me.

The film was a little weird but the organization of the Meet up was really good.
