Free Fishing Day (no license required) - San Pablo Reservoir - Catfish & Bass

From the DFW website:

Have you ever felt the excitement of watching your bobber suddenly jiggle, then dive out of sight? Or feeling the tap-tap-tap of a bass as it tastes the worm on the end of your line? Or having a salmon practically tear the rod out of your hands as it smashes your lure? What's that? You say you never learned to fish?

If you are new to the sport of fishing, and not sure if you will enjoy it, a great opportunity awaits you. CDFW offers two Free Fishing Days each year. On these days, you can fish without a sport fishing license. Free Fishing Days provide a great, low-cost way to give fishing a try. Some CDFW Regions offer a Fishing in the City program where you can go fishing in the middle of major metropolitan areas perhaps just a few blocks from your home. Fishing in the City and free fishing day clinics are designed to educate novice anglers about fishing ethics, fish habits, effective methods for catching fish, and fishing tackle. You can even learn how to clean and prepare your catch so you can enjoy it for dinner that night.

There it is, no fishing license required. However, it's $7 to park and $5 for a daily fishing permit at the lake. In July the catfish and Bass will be active in this area, so chicken livers and worms will be your best bet. If you get there real early in the morning you have a small chance to catch trout with worms or power bait.

If you do not have a fishing pole, tackle, or bait, please feel free to come as many of us have plenty of extra rods. Just comment below so we know how many extra to bring. We will be fishing all day long so drop in whenever you feel. There is cell phone reception here, so we can pass out phone numbers if you can't find us.

This area is just to the right of the boat launch area. There are picnic tables, BBQs, restrooms and even a little store extremely close by. This is a great cheap way to spend the day with the family outside at the lake, while introducing them to fishing.

I will be bringing charcol for the BBQs along with some hot dogs and hamburgers. If we want to grill up some fish we catch too, I will have fresh tortillas for some amazing fish tacos.

I hope to see you guys soon!

I saw a post online about a free fishing day on October 25th at San Pablo Dam for 8:00am-1:00pm and was wondering if you needed a fishing license for that event(If it is a real event). If you could get back to me on any info on that I would appreciate it.

Probably a state fishing license is required, but the lake fishing license is most likely free. The only thing for sure is that you still have to pay for parking but at a discounted price of 4 bucks.

Thanks. Was going to have a family fishing day there but they don't have state licenses so guess not. Thanks though

Hey to all bay area anglers! This will be my first fishing trip of the year and hoping to start it off right.

I have a new 12ft Saturn inflatable ("Hotlips") with a 20 hp Honda that I'm going to take out as early as I can. There is definitely room for one other angler (maybe two if gear is high and tight ;) So anyone interested in getting off the shore let me know! I live in SF and go out on the bay as well as fresh waters to fish as well as crab (when in season...).
As for the free fishing day coming up, anyone in SF is welcome to go with!

Salmon season is coming up fast!

Nice, I have a something similar, except I only have a 55 pound thrust electric trolling motor. I won't be taking mine out on this trip though as I will be hanging out with everyone on shore. You can join us or I can just give you some pointers on where to go.

    Hello fellow anglers,

I really want to go for the July 5th meetup. But its a little dicey as I don't have my DMV license yet(I am new to USA). If someone driving out from the South Bay Area could kindly give me a lift, I would be really thankful. I am ready to share gas expenses etc.
    Looking forward !
    Thanks in advance !

Is there enough extra fishing gear for my friend Sharon and I? Also, where is a good place to pick up that bait? We're kind of more light/casual fishers so we don't have much gear and knowledge. We're excited for this event! :)

    June 10, 2014

    • Asiel

Yes, plenty of extra equipment for you. You can buy worms and small bait fish right at the entry shack where you pay for your daily permit. Chicken livers can be bought at any grocery store where chicken is sold. We will have plenty of bait though so feel free to just show up.
