Long Ridge Open Space Preserve is in the South Bay, near Los Gatos. We'll meet at the Hickory Oaks Trailhead at Skyline Blvd. Don't use the Meetup map. Instead use this Google map:
There's plenty of parking along the road there usually. From here we'll hike east on Hickory Oaks Trail, taking that to the Ward Road Trail. This eventually turns into the Slate Creek Trail once we enter the Redwood Forest. We'll hike a bit in the redwoods and then take a break there on the fire road. Then we'll return via the same route we took in, back to the trailhead and our cars, so this is not a loop trail. We'll also probably take a break on the way back since it is almost entirely uphill for the return.
This is a beautiful but arduous hike. It's only 4 miles in total, but the first half is all downhill and the 2nd is all uphill, so be prepared for a work out. Three fifths of the hike is in grasslands and scrublands, so bring sunscreen.
We'll for sure take the full time allotted, so if you need to be back at your car before 4:30, please plan to depart from the group early or consider another hike.
Look forward to seeing you guys there!
**PLEASE NOTE*** We/I have no idea if cells will work here, so please take the time to get directions (both what I wrote above and using "get directions" from google) and milage markers BEFORE you leave so that you can meet us at the designated place and time. Using google maps while on route results in some wonky, incorrect directions due to the sketchy reception for portable devices in these remote areas. So again, it is best to get directions BEFORE you leave, at a place that has good internet access (such as a computer). We'll wait 10 to 15 minutes for everyone and then will begin the hike. Let me know if you have any questions.
