The Bay Area Gay Spirit/Flesh and Spirit Queer Men's Drum Circle usually meets monthly at members' homes around SF Bay. Open to all interested queer/LGBTQ men regardless of drumming experience. No charge or donation requested. Please bring an open heart, something for the potluck and any drums, rattles, etc. you have. We have some extra percussion instruments on hand for those who have none.
Originally founded by two gay shamans over 20 years ago, the group nowadays involves a bit of ritual, drumming as meditation and healing and heart sharing. The primary focus is on rhythm.
A drum circle is any group of people playing (usually) hand drums and percussion in a circle. They are distinct from a drumming group or troupe in that the drum circle is an end in itself rather than preparation for a performance....
In 1991, ...Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart stated:
Typically, people gather to drum in drum "circles" with others from the surrounding community. The drum circle offers equality because there is no head or tail....The main objective is to share rhythm and get in tune with each other and themselves. To form a group consciousness.....a new voice, a collective voice, emerges from the group as they drum together.
