Investigation at the Meek Mansion in Hayward

Paranormal Investigation for members only (no guests allowed and no one under the age of 18)

Cost - $80.00 per person (payable at time of RSVP)

We will have 8 hours to investigate 3 floors, a basement, cistern and cupola. We will be separated into 2 groups of 6. Please do not wear any perfume, cologne or scented lotions - as it makes it hard to determine phantom smells. Please feel free to bring any equipment except for Ouija boards and headlamp style flashlights. You can bring food and drinks that can be left in the carriage house, which will be our setup area.

History of Death and Paranormal Activity

There is a history of natural deaths in the home along with an assisted suicideThere are claims of children's, men's and women's voices and the apparition of a woman in white.

If you have time check out "apraparanormal "as well as others on youtube for videos of different investigations at Meek Mansion.

Family and House History

(Information from the Hayward Area Historical Society website)

The Meek Estate is located on Hampton Road between Boston and Harvard Road in the Cherryland area. The Estate consists of a 26-room mansion, carriage house and 9.75 acre public park.

William Meek was one of the first pioneers of commercial agriculture in Alameda County. From his arrival in 1859 to his death in 1880, Meek worked energetically to develop the fertile agricultural region lying in and around Eden Township.

Born in 1816, Meek grew up in Ohio and Iowa. Following the tragic death of his second wife in 1847, Meek left home and moved to Oregon. He established a nursery in the Willamette River Valley with Henderson Lewelling and began shipping trees and fruit to California. Meek received fabulous prices for his goods from the lucrative San Francisco Bay Area market. In 1859 Meek decided to sell his holdings in Oregon and relocate to Alameda County.

By 1869, when the Meek Mansion was built, Meek had acquired some 3000 acres, most of which lay in the Hayward area. Meek's estate included all of the land from what is now Mission Boulevard to about Meekland Avenue and from Lewelling Boulevard almost to Winton Avenue. He grew grain, raised sheep, planted some row crops, but became most well-known for his extensive orchards, primarily of cherry as well as apricot, plum, almond and some citrus.

In addition to his distinction as the "first farmer" of Alameda County, William Meek was known for his participation in all facets of life in the county. For example, he was elected County Supervisor for four terms, beginning in 1861. He organized Alameda County’s first Agricultural Society, which chose him as its president in 1867. The society worked to promote the agricultural bounty of the area. Meek was also heavily involved in education, serving as a member of the first School Board of the San Lorenzo Elementary School District in 1864 and a regent of the University of California from 1874-1878. He was also a member of the first board of trustees of Mills College [masked]), where his daughters and granddaughters would be educated.

After Meek's death in 1880, the estate was left to his children. His sons, Horry and William E., continued to manage the property for many years. Horry Meek was distinguished as the president of the Bank of Hayward, and led the movement to build the first electric car line from Oakland to Hayward in 1892.

The Meek Estate remained in the Meek family until 1940, although most of the 3000 acres were sold off gradually in small parcels prior to that time. Where the Meek orchards once stood, houses eventually took over and the area became known as Cherryland in honor of Meek’s bountiful trees.

In 1940 Dr. Milton P. Ream purchased the last 10 acres and the mansion. In 1964, the mansion was slated to be razed in preparation for a housing development. HARD, with citizen backing, bought the estate, saving it from demolition. In 1973 Meek Mansion was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Here's the rest of my clips from Meek Mansion. Given all I caught on 5/24/14, I can't wait to return to the Meek this weekend!

Here's a sample of the knocking, thuds, and footsteps we were hearing in the Front Parlor. I've also got a set of EVPs from the same room that I'll post next.

I still have hours of recording to listen to. In the Parlor , when Laura said, "Paul, " there had been whistling on my recording. I heard it a few times in the play back & then it disappeared! Wired.

Here's Part 2 of my EVPs (and recordings of Laura J's EVPs) from the Basement.

    http://www.ghostworld.org/2014/06/13/meek-mansion-52414-voices-and-other-things-from-the-basement-part-2/

I also want to say that most of the EVPs I'm presenting are recorded off Laura J's playback right after an EVP session. (Thanks, Laura!) But some of the EVPs are definitely ones I caught on my own DVR.

That was some crazy stuff happening in the Basement! Besides posting the usual audio clips, I've also written about other things that were happening while we were down there.

The Meek Mansion tour continues, with a stop in the Dining Room. I'm not sure I'm hearing the EVPs correctly, so feel free to let me know what you hear.

The next stop on your Meek Mansion tour is the Solarium on the first floor. I caught just a few EVPs as we weren't in there for very long.

During our time there, Chris and I both felt something in the far corner of the Solarium. (The Solarium is shaped like the letter L, as it wraps around the side of MM.) As a group, we also heard voices. I have to say that, when I did my walk-around before the investigation started, the Solarium caught my attention. It wasn't all the windows, although I did notice them. I sensed there was something/someone in there and I had a feeling it would be an active area.

When we're in the servants' quarters and Diane asks, "Did you used to stay in these quarters?" I can hear a faint "no" at the 4 second mark along with what you hear. The "no" sounds faint and slightly echo-y.

Here's my first set of EVPs. I'm almost done listening to all the recording from this night and I have to say that I'm impressed by the sheer number of EVPs caught and other phenomena experienced.

I haven't counted but I think I actually have more EVPs from Meek Mansion on this night than I do from the April 2014 visit to Preston Castle.

For those in my group, the 'red velvet lady' came through very briefly at the channeling session in Jim's group. I stated, "did someone pop over from another house?"...and Chris validated with the dowsing rods "yes". I had a feeling it was the "red velvet lady" and it was confirmed with a lady saying "Te quiero." EVP, which means 'I love you' in Spanish. She was either directing that comment to me or to Jim.....somehow I think it was the latter. :-). But I really want to know she is...

This is a great catch! (On Laura J's recording) This is from the Attic on the Third Floor and sounds to me like it's an answer to the question being asked.

This is from the Third Floor front right side room, as we were transitioning to the Chair Room (with the chairs you can sit in, rear of building). Can someone tell me if this is one of us saying something at the 8 second mark? It's not me. Thanks.

These 2 clips are from the front room on the Third Floor. (Some call it the left side room but it's the right side to me, as it's the front room on the right side of the building as you face the front door.) This was the first room my group investigated.

    Any idea what's being said?

On the first clip at 5 seconds I hear "Help me". Also Ann in answer to your question of what was the last meal eaten in the dining room, I hear "pancakes".

Thank you Laura and our docents for hosting us the other night. Lots of EVP's that unfortunately did not make it to my recorder (blonde, redhead, brunette, in the attic and our names being said in the parlor room). The servant's room was great (I was able to hear the bell ringing on my recorder) and the duel dowsing rod session in the dining room was fascinating. Thanks Laura for bringing the KFC. Another great group and I'm bummed I did not get a response for the "what is your favorite 18th century Russian poet?" Maybe next time.

When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.”

      2 · May 27

  • Mariah

I think I know why someone rang the bell...they were FINALLY on the other side (literally and figuratively) of the hospitality role. Whoever rang the bell was so used to responding to the family's servant's bell...it finally became their turn!

    3 · May 25

    • Nikki

Laura they rang the bell twice and the evp before the ringing, it sounds like a man says go ahead (can't understand one word) they're waiting. There's another whisper and he says I'll try and then the bell rings. It rings it again after the next question.

      May 26

    • Nikki

Ok hold on. Listening to it again. One person says I don't know how to ring it. Another voice says bring it here and I'll bring it to ....... (can't get it might be a name) there's a pause and possibly I hope you like it and then it rings the first time.

      May 26

  • Laura J

Thank you once again to a great group of investigators. I think we had great groups and some awesome experiences. I was really happy with the wide range of interaction. The desk bell ringing, the rempod activity, Mariah's channeling, the many many sounds of footsteps and whispering, the fantastic EVP's. I loved the cat purring evp from group 2 and group 1 with the evp of "I love cats". The loud evp of the name Morena (which I am researching) and tons of flashlight play and all the other things we experienced as a group. Thank you to Donna and Gail for going along with us and to Dana for the tour and guarding the carriage house. There is alot of evidence to go over but I look forward to hearing what people find. On to the next....

    3 · May 26

    • Mariah

Got an EVP up on 3rd floor of man saying "Morena, don't worry they are recording. They are trying to capture EVPs by singing 'Ring Around the Rosie' but I am changing the EVPs to be me."

      2 · May 26

Many of you have showed a major interest in having an event where we can share our evidence with each other and with other members of the BAGH group. I have wanted to do this for a long time but have not had a place to do it that was quiet enough and big enough to accommodate more than a couple of people. I am pleased to say that I may have located a location that will provide space and the quiet that we require. Now it's just a matter of finding out what they will charge us to use the site. I will work on this and keep you all informed. They also have access to a pull down movie screen and I believe speakers also. Fingers crossed.......more to come soon.

Great investigation at a very active place. We were able to communicate with several different spirits through the night. Thanks, Laura!

    2 · May 25

  • Mariah

One last comment before taking a nap...I REALLY think we should get a gathering together to listen to captured EVP's...I think it's a neat opportunity for us to see how our own psychic abilities are really working (sensing what questions to ask and getting an amazing response) and sharing what the spirits took the 'time' and energy to say! I think the more we really listen, respect and heed their messages, the more they will interact with us. I would have people over to my apt in SF, but it's so small I could only comfortably fit 3 others...I am sure we will work something out.

I would also like to hear people talk about the different ways they explore the paranormal. So many different approaches, tools, equipment--what works for you and why? I want to ask while on the investigation but there just isn't that kind of time to get into that.

      4 · May 25

    • Nikki

I had a great time and agree with you! I didn't get a lot of time to hear about your experiences Mariah! I'll post my evps when I get through them.

Great night. Amazing interactive clear responses in almost every single area...especially the servants' quarters. I have my listening to sessions and editing cut out for me! More than usual. Thank you everyone who brought the snacks! Very thoughtful and appreciated. And for my group, thank you for your interaction and trust with my channeling. The spirits were talkative on many levels. It's also wonderful to see how over time, that fellow investigators' abilities, including mine, are evolving. It truly is a remarkable thing to see and I know the spirits love it too. (Many of them...perhaps even the cranky ones.at least we can hear them complain!)

Hi Thayla, all of my investigations are for 18 and older for liabilty reasons but i do have some daytime events coming up that are some of the same locations where you can tour the sites, hear about some of the experiences and maybe have some of your own. Also there will be a medium or 2 there you might enjoy talkng with. Pretty much all of the daytime events are open to anyone 9 yrs old and above. I think most investigation teams are the same based on the venues constraints of liability. Sorry, but i hope to see you at another event soon. Laura
