Investigation at the Meek Mansion in Hayward

Paranormal Investigation for members only (no guests allowed and no one under the age of 18)

Cost - $80.00 per person (payable at time of RSVP)

We will have 8 hours to investigate 3 floors, a basement, cistern and cupola. We will be separated into 2 groups of 6. Please do not wear any perfume, cologne or scented lotions - as it makes it hard to determine phantom smells. Please feel free to bring any equipment except for Ouija boards and headlamp style flashlights. You can bring food and drinks that can be left in the carriage house, which will be our setup area.

History of Death and Paranormal Activity

There is a history of natural deaths in the home along with an assisted suicideThere are claims of children's, men's and women's voices and the apparition of a woman in white.

If you have time check out "apraparanormal "as well as others on youtube for videos of different investigations at Meek Mansion.

Family and House History

(Information from the Hayward Area Historical Society website)

The Meek Estate is located on Hampton Road between Boston and Harvard Road in the Cherryland area. The Estate consists of a 26-room mansion, carriage house and 9.75 acre public park.

William Meek was one of the first pioneers of commercial agriculture in Alameda County. From his arrival in 1859 to his death in 1880, Meek worked energetically to develop the fertile agricultural region lying in and around Eden Township.

Born in 1816, Meek grew up in Ohio and Iowa. Following the tragic death of his second wife in 1847, Meek left home and moved to Oregon. He established a nursery in the Willamette River Valley with Henderson Lewelling and began shipping trees and fruit to California. Meek received fabulous prices for his goods from the lucrative San Francisco Bay Area market. In 1859 Meek decided to sell his holdings in Oregon and relocate to Alameda County.

By 1869, when the Meek Mansion was built, Meek had acquired some 3000 acres, most of which lay in the Hayward area. Meek's estate included all of the land from what is now Mission Boulevard to about Meekland Avenue and from Lewelling Boulevard almost to Winton Avenue. He grew grain, raised sheep, planted some row crops, but became most well-known for his extensive orchards, primarily of cherry as well as apricot, plum, almond and some citrus.

In addition to his distinction as the "first farmer" of Alameda County, William Meek was known for his participation in all facets of life in the county. For example, he was elected County Supervisor for four terms, beginning in 1861. He organized Alameda County’s first Agricultural Society, which chose him as its president in 1867. The society worked to promote the agricultural bounty of the area. Meek was also heavily involved in education, serving as a member of the first School Board of the San Lorenzo Elementary School District in 1864 and a regent of the University of California from 1874-1878. He was also a member of the first board of trustees of Mills College [masked]), where his daughters and granddaughters would be educated.

After Meek's death in 1880, the estate was left to his children. His sons, Horry and William E., continued to manage the property for many years. Horry Meek was distinguished as the president of the Bank of Hayward, and led the movement to build the first electric car line from Oakland to Hayward in 1892.

The Meek Estate remained in the Meek family until 1940, although most of the 3000 acres were sold off gradually in small parcels prior to that time. Where the Meek orchards once stood, houses eventually took over and the area became known as Cherryland in honor of Meek’s bountiful trees.

In 1940 Dr. Milton P. Ream purchased the last 10 acres and the mansion. In 1964, the mansion was slated to be razed in preparation for a housing development. HARD, with citizen backing, bought the estate, saving it from demolition. In 1973 Meek Mansion was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Ann I wonder if this is your voice carrying from upstairs? This was recorded in the cistern and the "can you hear me?" is not me. It echoes & is loud like it was spoken in the cistern though

I remember asking if anyone wanted to say hello & I heard a "hey" right afterwards and I think I said "Hey, how are you?"..but somehow they changed it to "can you hear me?". If you listen carefully the voice has a slight accent that I don't have..it is a strange one

Sorry for the delay in responding. No, that's definitely not me you're hearing.

Ann I have the same issue. I posted a few spirit box clips and evps to my Facebook page & I have friends that are like "nope, don't hear anything". I think maybe sometimes they are only meant for certain people..or something..I don't know. I have that cat question on my recorder and I heard the same thing you did..long hair. Guess they don't need a Furminator in the afterlife though

When you ask if they had a cold drink I hear "didn't have a drink!". Lady sounds kind of offended, like duh, we can't eat or drink anything!

This is what I hear on some of these: Clip 2: I hear "Hi" at the very beginning Clip 3: I hear "crossed over" before Marcy even asks the question Clip 4: I hear "right" after someone says the room is cold Clip 5: I hear "open your pockets" Clip 6: I hear "cellphone call" Clip 7: "No doubt about it" These are just my opinion.....nice job as always Ann.

I kind of hear it but it is so distorted that it is hard to tell. I'm not sure if it's soundcloud or what the issue is. Do you do a lot of editing to the clip before you post it?

      July 1, 2014

Not on that one. There was a lot of echo from the cistern..the vibration at the beginning is from one of us hitting against the chairs probably..

I was briefly listening to one of my recorders this morning just verify the space I need for an event tonight. On one of my four recorders, 11 seconds into entering Meek Mansion, I heard "Laura" 4 different times, from 4 different voices, in a period of 12 seconds. I guess I will have to listen to the first 25 seconds of each of the other recorders to see if I picked it up there too. How unusual that I heard my name...lol, but this was a little overkill. Unless they were just trying to let me know we weren't really welcome that night. I'll have to listen to find out.

On 'Cathy's recorder' in the basement, Mike asked: Has anyone been tortured in this basement? Male spirit: "Uh, no. My brother and me would hide the murder. " Joanne (I think asked): Is this where you hide from us? ...SO MANY amazing things going on here. 1) It's incredibly neat she repeated just after, a very significant word from the EVP. 2) The last time I was here, I believe I channeled the woman who was raped and killed. And when asked who did it to her, she said two brothers. (Pam, Debbie, Jim, Keena and John heard me.)

I know this sounds like a broken record, but thank you again Laura and the docents for another great investigation. Plus, the snacks were much to my liking! I have only listened to the playroom (3rd floor) and the servent's quarters (Quinten, Laura, and I) and have picked up some good EVP's. During our mini session, I was not able to pick up "Mariah" on my recorder (my recorder was about several feet away from Laura's), but was able to hear it very clearly during my recording of Laura's playback (weird how this happens). I really liked the idea of having very small groups for a more "intimate" session and being able to investigate with different people.
Sadly, my next investigation is 27 days away.

It also sounded like there was some faint whispering when Mike asked do you like having more men in the room..like they were saying "where's Mariah?" "go get Mariah"

It is the people in this group that make these investigations so special. Everyone has such great energy. I always feel we are in good hand with Laura in the lead. Can't wait for the next one. I got some crazy EVPs on the video camera. Will post when I am done reviewing.

Well thank you to another great group for your participation and passion in this great field of paranormal investigation/study. I hope the groups worked out for everyone...I do my very best to mix them up and now after our conversation last night, I will be able to mix them up even more thanks to the "couples" willing to be split up "sometimes".
My group last night had a high number of EVP's, on almost every floor, saying "get out" in one way or another. "get out", "get out of here", "get them out". It doesn't seem like they wanted us there. We heard alot of unexplained footsteps that didn't seem to be the other group. Alot of other EVP's too and what seemed to be continual conversation the whole night in all of the rooms. Some good rempod activity in Mr Meeks bedroom and lots of flashlight play in different rooms. I personally felt the most in the servants quarters. Well time for audio review and trying to figure how to fix the broken rempod antenna. Thanks again...on to the next....

    2 · June 29, 2014

    • Laura J

I have only listened to the first 30 minutes of 1 recorder and I have at least 3 forms of "get out". We weren't welcomed this time. :-(

      June 30, 2014

    • Marcy J

sounds like a small child greeted us as soon as we got into the house..I can't tell what it's saying though https://soundcloud.com...

      June 30, 2014

  • Marcy J

This was a fun night although our group seemed to get quieter activity/evps. One of the creepier places was the cistern. Only Quent and I went down there and the rest of the group stayed in the basement area. I have an evp of a realllly deep voice commenting when I say I'm going to sit down on a dirty chair

    https://soundcloud.com/marcy-johnston/weird-evps-in-cistern-meek-estate

    June 29, 2014

    • Laura J

Yeah Mike did talk about the rusty chair in the cistern and I also talked about one time I was in there how I threw a rock and asked them to throw it back, which is exactly what's on your second evp...weird.

      June 30, 2014

    • Marcy J

Well for the rock one, I remembered you saying that they threw one back...I can hear a spirit say something like oh I threw one before...they didn't throw any back at us though. I thought the chair thing was funny because that deep voice says "rusty too...god DAMN you" and then another spirit says "that's funny"

      June 30, 2014

  • Chris

Another fun night.....lots of evps. Good group as always. Curious to hear what the spirits were saying because the conversations were def long lol. Lots of noises, knocking etc in the cupola which I hadnt investigated before. And I will be interested to see what our grumpy friend in the playroom was saying haha. As always, thanks again Laura for keeping us going with lots of new investigations and ur hard work & always positive attitude:)

Some of you have heard this before, but I wanted to mention it again: I know some investigators are not really 'spiritual' nor are involved with serious spiritual development and may be going on these investigations/events as a form of entertainment with a curious mind. But I would like to impart this idea which is really can be viewed as a double entendre. We need to keep L.O.V.E. in mind....we need to Listen to the spirits and our own instincts/senses, be Open-minded with what we experience, Validate when the spirits do speak to us and let them know we "hear/sense" them and to also validate each other if we sense/hear/see the energy and to try and continuously Evolve as paranormal investigators and really as spirit communicators!

For those investigators you haven't met yet, do you think you will get scared meeting us because we already know a little bit about you by reading your introduction and you know a little bit about us by reading our intros.?

I apologize in advance, as half the group already knows about the EVPs I recorded on 5/24/14, when I first investigated Meek Mansion.

But I wanted to give the rest of the group a chance to hear these EVPs. There were a lot of EVPs! Hopefully we'll have just as active of a night on 6/28/14.

The EVPs can be found on my blog:

    http://www.ghostworld.org/

This will take you to the main page. Use the search bar at the top right of the page and look for "Meek Mansion" to find these EVPs.

This will give you an idea of what the sea otter will be bringing to share at the break time. (Taken from the internet.) :-)

Sea otters eat urchins, abalone, mussels, clams, crabs, snails and about 40 other marine species. Sea otters eat approximately 25% of their weight in food each day to support their high metabolism.

Ok so I had this weird idea yesterday to wear some of my vintage clothes to one of the investigations to see if it would make the spirits more comfortable or trigger more activity. It wouldn't be the most *practical* thing in the world but I would be interested to see what happens. I don't have any Victorian things that I can fit into but I have some 20s clothing. What do you guys think?

I have a couple boxes of Victorian and Edwardian stuff. Most of it is pretty tiny in the waist but I have a few that are probably a size 6 or so..it's hard to tell.

I used to go to this park all the time as a child, I especially loved riding my bike around the house, and looking into the windows.. Some windows/rooms creeped me out more than others.. I often remember curtains moving by themselves and seeing white figures occasionally.... I've always wanted to go inside.. I might have to go this.. I have to think about it..
