January meetup, with Robin Hanson and Michael Vassar

  • January 15, 2010 · 7:00 PM
  • SIAI House

Good rationality conversation, and abundant snacks, as usual; supplemented, unusually, by Robin Hanson, who will be in town for
Foresight 2010. Michael Vassar may also be here; he is moving to the area. Feel free to bring food/drink to share, or to not. Newcomers welcome, as always.

Richard, CDC indeed shows that during sexual contact, the chances of getting HIV are less than 1% - http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5402a1.htm#tab1

Harwons, are you trying to show that I'm just a silly conspiracy theorist? To answer, yes I do have such information, but not enough to speak with any conviction about that issue in particular. I believe that there was once an official agreement that a vaccination with a tiny amount of mercury was suspected of such an effect in one highly sensitive child. Yet serious studies did not find any statistically significant support for the idea in general. I make no claim about that.

Geoff Greer, let's talk about whether such a belief is justified and what this group should do to protect itself from nutcase comments bringing disdain upon the group. I AM NOT AN AIDS DENIALIST. I say AIDS is real, but the CDC statistics PROVE that HIV is not even a transmitted disease, much less a sexually transmitted disease. That it has NO CONNECTION TO AIDS is more complex to support, but Henry Bauer's book convinces me. Shall we argue the merits of my claims, rationally?

Richard, got any information on vaccines causing autism?

Richard, I think your comments are detrimental to this group. Anyone who isn't familiar with this group will see your endorsement of AIDS denialism and dismiss us all as crackpots. I should note that most people at this meetup defer to scientific consensus in subjects they haven't thoroughly researched. This is the first time I've heard AIDS denialism endorsed by any member of this group.

If being a skeptic on Global Warming (prescriptions) and the HIV part of HIV/AIDS isn't enough to get me totally ignored, what if I add that more fission reactors will be OK with me if they follow "The Liquid Fluoride Thorium Paradigm". Google that to see why I say so.

I'm skeptical that reducing carbon loading of the atmosphere by global agreement at great cost now is the best solution to global warming. Instead, I support what Bjorn Lomborg says in "Cool It".

I will also bring documentary evidence gathered from the Centers for Disease Control official statistics that HIV cannot be the cause of AIDS. It is "The Origin, Persistence and Failings of the HIV/AIDS Theory" by Henry Bauer. Yes, he's the guy who's not sure there isn't a real Loch Ness Monster.
