Actually, yes you can unsubscribe from the discussion without unsubscribing from the announcements.  Go to Account > Membership & Communication


The radio buttons used to be labeled differently, but I believe the ones on the left (now labeled "Organizers only") are still in fact announcements only--i.e., you will only get emails from the organizers that they explicitly send as announcements to everybody, whether they're on the mailing list or not.  As you can see, another option is a daily digest.

That said, Robin, if you want to keep discussions over on the message boards, rather than on the mailing list, then I'd suggest disabling the mailing list.  It's confusing to have both, anyway.
