Lightroom Meetup - Too Much Good Stuff for One Title

Hi Everyone,

Please join us this coming Thursday the 18th at the Adobe San Francisco office for a Lightroom User Group meeting. At our last meeting we got some feedback that the 6:30 start time was a little early for some folks. So here's what we're going to do this time: pizza and socializing will still start at 6:30, and anyone who can make it should join us then. The presentation itself will start at 7:00 sharp. So, if you can't get there until 7:00, no worries, you won't miss anything (except hot pizza and good conversation).

This time we're going to focus primarily on the Develop module. We'll present an example workflow that will demonstrate how you can think about approaching your photos in the Develop module. We'll also discuss working with 32bit HDR images in the Develop module. Don't know what that means? You should definitely come, because it's very cool.

Time allowing, and if people are interested, we'll also demonstrate how to get photos between Lightroom and your mobile device, with no cables, syncing, or hassle.

Limited parking will be available in the Adobe garage. Hope to see everyone there!

The recording of last night's meeting is now available on the Discussions page, in the "All Recorded Meetings" thread.

Sorry to those who were stuck in traffic. Not sure how much of that was due to the 49er's game, but in the future we may need to do a better job of scheduling our meetup to avoid pro sports nights. :-)

I did Bart to Civic Center with my bike-- very fast.

Ben and Shared, thanks for hosting this event. Last night was my first time there, and I found it informative. You did a good job with the presentation. I'll be back :)

Thanks Ben for the recording. I'm not sure what the traffic hang up was but the Bay Bridge was crazy. I've been to almost everyone of your meetings & never seen traffic like last night. I only missed 15 minutes of your presentation and I'm so excited I'll now get to see what I missed. Thanks again for all you do.

benjamin-- thanks for the good presentation. I couldn't wait to get home and try the 32-bit HDR in LR. benjamin-

49ers traffic didnt cause any problems for the meetup -- that game started much earlier; i came up 101 from the peninsula right past the stadium to get to the Meetup at about 6:15 and had no trouble.

Did they cover moving photos from LightRoom to iPad? Love to know what their solution was.

    October 18, 2012

    • Bill H.

David - if you have the Dropbox app installed on the iPad, then once you have sent the files from the computer to Dropbox, they'll be automatically downloaded to the app on the iPad. This could take some time depending on the number (and size) of the files and whether you're connecting using 3G, LTE, or WiFi. So if the iPad is connected to the network, you should be able to just start up the Dropbox app to see the files.

Excellent meeting, as always. Ben is a very good presenter, well prepared, and always has images ready to demonstrate the features he's showing. thanks Ben - for a great group!

My 2 cents on the subject of making a video of the meetup. The Creative Suite Lovers Meetup Group records every meetup (at Adobe HQ in SF or online only). Each recording is posted in a special folder under "Discussions/Message Board". The folder is "push-pinned" to the top of the list, so it's easy to access any recorded meetup. I believe the Adobe meeting room has all the recording facilities built in. The main thing to record is the shared computer screen, & the voice of the presenter, not the face of the presenter. The videos are hosted on Adobe Connect. Click on http://www.meetup.com/creatives... and try out a recording to see what they are like. Typically a recording begins with a few slides with links, even a bit of selling the presenter's product, & thanks to the sponsors along with links to their websites. The comments from live attendees on the left side can be helpful. The recording "Photoshop & InDesign Workflow |[masked]" is a good example. It's a win-win-win.

Is there motorcycle parking in the garage?

I think parking on the street there should be safe. It's a well-traveled street, good lighting, and you are far enough away from the Market Street lowlife types that they wouldn't venture that far.

      October 17, 2012

    • Brian F.

There is plenty of mc parking in the garage (hang a right immediately after entering the garage, three areas in the slightly lower section), but the street is much more convenient.

Hi - new member here. What is the target audience of this presentation on the Develop Module (what skill level)? Thanks!

    October 17, 2012

    • Bill H.

Sorry, one more question: is the format such that we should bring our own computers, or is it primarily a presentation we just watch?

      October 17, 2012

    • Benjamin W.

No need to bring a computer, though of course you're more than welcome to.

Hey Ben, will this meetup be done in San Jose as well?

I really think we ought to be greatful to Ben and the other folks who put these great presentations on during what is after-hours for them. A lot less whining and a bit more appreciation seems in order.

    October 15, 2012

    • James A.

      I concur...

      October 16, 2012

    • Dave L.

Here, here. In the two Adobe related groups I'm in, I hear so more 'grumping' about what folks are not getting, than appreciation for what they are getting for free. BTW, this is a "Meetup" group, the whole point is to meet others in person... :)

Absolutely Michael! Complaining doesn't get anything done....it just makes matters worse. I just got back from Cuba a couple of weeks ago. Life is hard in Havana and one of the most fantastic benefits of being there is that you learn from the culture and the Cubans there not to complain about anything. They simply won't listen to anyone who does and if you're around someone who does happen to complain you're likely to hear....ah....it's Cuba.

I live in SF, near 7th & Folsom. I disagree about it not being safe to walk down 7th from Market. I do it all the time, and have been doing so for 15 years. Don't walk it while texting on your smartphone, and pay attention to your surroundings, but really, 7th is safe, it's 6th that is a snakepit.

I agree. Also two weeks ago, at the San Jose Photoshop User's Group there were over 100 individuals there to listen to a presentation about LR. I was made aware of the LR meetup group at that meeting - I have been a member of the SJ group since Lightroom was introduced and we have many meetings where LR was discussed to a standing room only crowd. Living south of San Jose by another 30 minutes makes coming to SF on a regular basis for meetup very difficult. I think the problem is that the meetup has not been promoted in the San Jose area and a lot more people would come if they knew about it. You should reconsider San Jose after you figure out how to promote it better.

George, there is nothing keeping you from organizing people together if you want it bad enough. Contact friends through Social Media sites and get enough people together so that you can then come approach the organizers and say something to the effect of, "I now have x amount of people interested. Can we talk about having a Meeting in SJ?....

William your right. Ben (or anyone) do you know how many of the 400+ members are in the South Bay area? It might give me an idea as to where to start.

      October 15, 2012

  • vicky

Will this be recorded for later viewing? Thanks.

    October 12, 2012

Stephen, sorry Benjamin, maybe you are new to the group. They have never done a lecture in SF, for example, and then do the same exact presentation in SJ. They typically do different presentations switching between SJ and SF. If it isn't clear to you, we get 60+ people in Sf and maybe 8 people in SJ. Pretty simple math as it seems SF is easier for most people to reach . He also states "for the time being". which I interpret to mean if the Sj interest picks up, maybe meeting will go to SJ once again. Sounds very professional to me. To reiterate, they have never done a presentation in SF and then turned around and done the exact same one in SJ, let's say one month later. Ben, don't bother answering him as he's just upset that the meetings won't be done in SJ for the time being.
