Quarter Domes, Yosemite

  • Mar 9, 2013 · 2:30 PM

Let's ascend Quarter Domes in Yosemite (http://www.snwburd.com/dayhikes/peak/4152) next Sunday, 3/10. From Yosemite Valley, Quarter Domes is about 16 miles round trip with 4500' elevation gain. It has an outstanding view of Half Dome, Cloud's Rest, Tenaya Canyon, Mount Watkins, and Yosemite Valley. It's an intermediate level trip -- nothing too steep or avalanche prone, but lots of distance and elevation gain. This trip should be appropriate for backcountry skis, splitboards, or snowshoes.

The route I was thinking of goes from Happy Isles to Little Yosemite Valley, and then follows the Half Dome Trail to the ridge connecting Half Dome and Quarter Domes, which can then be followed to Quarter Domes. We skied it last spring, which was exceptionally dry, and had sufficient snow for skiing above 7000'. This year is quite a bit wetter, so I'm guessing that there will be snow from Nevada Falls onward. Overall, rather than a trip for big downhill runs, this is mostly a trip to see some fabulous scenery in winter without the summer crowds.

Regarding logistics, I'd like to leave the Bay Area on Saturday (3/9) afternoon around 2:30. The plan will be to camp on Forest Service land just northwest of Yosemite near Hardin Flat Road. We'll ski on Sunday, and drive back to the Bay Area on Sunday night or first thing on Monday morning if people's schedules allow.
