Coast Camp 1 Night Backpack w/ Fire! (easy 2 mile walk in)

Hello Backpackers!

This is one of our favorite trips each year for a reason.  I believe this is our fifth trip to this particular campsite, but with a semi-private beach and beach fires, it's a hard one to pass up!  As far as backpacking goes, this is SUPER easy - it's a 2 mile walk in to the campsite over nearly all flat ground.  If you haven't backpacked in years or want to try, this is a great event to do it.  If you have questions about gear, feel free to ask in the comments section.

The group will consist both of backpackers and day hikers.  We'll be meeting at 10:30am at the trailhead and should be setting up camp by noon.  That afternoon, some of us will be headed over to the estuary to take pictures and others may choose to wander up the coast a bit (it's a fantastic hike) while others are free to hang out at camp or on the beach; this is totally a fun-centered trip.  The hikers will return to the trail head while we enjoy a gourmet dinner followed by an evening around the beach fire.  Many of us will likely spend the night on the beach, conditions permitting.

For those who haven't been there, this is probably one of the best group sites in all of Point Reyes.  We have a semi-private beach and tons of room to setup.  The luxuries include toilets, a charcoal grill, picnic tables and potable water.  The $3 fee includes both $2 for the campsite and $1 for charcoal/locally sourced firewood.  Of all my trips with this group, probably my most memorable is sitting around a campfire at this very site.

This is probably one of our most popular events of the year.  As such, this event is open to members only (no guests).  I understand that many of us have to reserve before we know that we can make it for sure, but I am asking that anyone signed up makes a decision 2 weeks in advance.  This will allow others to take your space if they desire.  Anyone cancelling with less than two weeks notice (I'll send out a reminder e-mail) would get a dreaded strike against them.  More importantly, they may prevent another from getting to experience this fantastic trip.

In order to rsvp for this, you'll need to pay first.  Paying will automatically add you to the rsvp list and hold your spot.  If the meetup is full, click the Notify Me button and you'll get an e-mail as soon as a space opens (and they always do).  Note that there will be no refunds given - likely there will be a waitlist, so if you need to cancel out you can try to get someone to cover your space and pay you directly for it.

Given that there is limited parking at the trail head, we encourage everyone to carpool.  If you need a ride or can offer one, please go to http://www.groupcarpool.com/t/b67oci.

Can't wait to see everyone at Point Reyes.  It should be an epic trip!

Running behind I'm gonna have to meet at the camp. If there's any info on the location of our specific campsite it would probably be helpful.

Hi, I looked at the sign up sheet and I am wondering if food is not underestimated. If we expect 25 ppl should the numbers for the meals add up to approximately 25 ? Just asking.

    • Sean G.

We've never even come close to not having way too much food...So long as people sign up for the slots we should be fine.

Are you planning on doing any hikes on Sunday?

    September 1

    • Sean G.

Not at this time. We'll probably have a leisurely breakfast then break camp and head out. That's the group plan anyway.

      Hi Sean,
I looked at the link you posted and other than dinners/breakfasts. I haven't seen any specifics related to what type of food to bring. Also will we pack our backpacks on site or should they already be packed? Thanks:-)...

I got into the Yosemite camp this past weekend. It was fun but I'm not up for another this weekend. So someone can take my spot; sounds fun and beautiful!

Hi! Still planning to attend but looking for a lift. I live near North Berkeley BART, and could meet somewhere.

Hi! Looking forward to this, and wondering if a ride is possible from the East Bay or a BART hub.

I can also meet someone in SF or possibly Marin (though SF/East Bay are easier, as I live in Berkeley) via public transport.

You mention "gourmet dinner." Does that mean someone's cooking or are we supplying our own food?

    1 · July 11

    • Sean G.

Several of us will be cooking...I'll send around a signup sheet for food and shared gear about 2 weeks before the event

Check out the REI website, there's TONS of info on camping. And here's a very-thorough camping list: http://www.rei.com/le...

This sounds great! Can you put a link, or describe where we start? i.e. the trailhead and parking. I have a foot injury and not sure if can walk even 2 mi. :( but wanted to look at it on google maps...Thanks!

"The shortest approach to Coast Camp is via the 2.9 km (1.8 miles) slightly uphill hike on the Laguna and Firelane Trails, starting at the Laguna Trailhead just past the hostel."

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
