Fellow philosoverts

I happen to be in Mountain View Saturday afternoons now so I figured we can try this Red Rock Cafe.

Been there once - seemed ok. Let's give it a go.

See you there !

Thank you, Alex, for organizing a very interesting meetup. Good to meet you, Puneet. Sorry we missed you, Christine. I will bring my silly hat next time :) and hopefully we'll all know about upstairs.

    Sorry Christine !
I was wondering whether I should mention the upstairs but I figured people would eventually try it. You missed a great meetup but it's not the end of the world - there is always next time !
Laura and Puneet thank you both for this very interesting meetup ! I enjoyed it greatly and hope to see you guys again.

Hi Alex, I couldn't find you guys. I didn't know there was an upstairs. I got there about 3:10PM and didn't see you. So I left, thinking I had the wrong time. Sorry!!! I'm totally bummed.

Hi Alex - there's an upstairs, downstairs, and outside at this place. do you have a particular place you're thinking of meeting? or will you wear a funny hat? :) how shall we find you? maybe I'll just stand at the ordering counter and ask people if they're you :)

    Part 2/2
The only hopeful part of the movie are the two actors with a young child who seem to represent the idea of a simply joyous life untroubled with metaphysical questions.

(Personally I don't buy the whole idea that without faith life is meaningless but that seems to be the main premise for the director)

    Part 1/2
I had watched that movie a long time ago in college but was probably too young to grasp it's meaning or significance then. It did leave me with a feeling, even then, of an excessively depressing and morbid atmosphere. I just watched it again and here are a few impressions.

On one level it is a historical movie about the relationship between medieval christianity and the effect of mortality on human psyche and behavior. But it is really about the meaning of life and how death, because it is both inevitable and ineluctable, and when that reality is made concrete, forces us to confront the issue of meaning and meaninglessness.

Many of the faithful, are pushed into superstition and cruelty. Some of those who are skeptical and unconvinced about faith thirst for certainty because they cannot accept meaninglessness and nothinglessness (as the only logical alternative) that some others are brave enough to accept.

maybe we can discuss the movie "The Seventh Seal" by Ingmar Bergman? I just watched it and was wondering what others thought about it. It's on Hulu Plus, if you have that :-)
