After a long season of races, we are down to the final races that will determine the winner of the America's Cup.  At this point, the New Zealand team has a big lead and they seem to have a faster boat so there is a very good chance that they will win the cup.  The result will be that the next America's cup races will be held in New Zealand so this may be your last chance to photograph these amazing boats.

Date: Sunday, September 15

Time: Two races are scheduled with the first race starting at 1:15 pm. In order to get a parking space in the Crissy Field lot, I suggest that you plan to arrive early.

Meetup Location: For the races, we will be meeting in the area close to the Golden Gate Yacht club (marked with an X on the map below) which is close to where the races start. In general this is where the competition is especially intense because the boat that is in front at the start will frequently win the race.

Parking:  The closest parking is the lot in Crissy Field and it is free to park there. If you arrive early enough, you should be able to find a spot.  I am planning to arrive at 10:00 am and, if the crowd is not too heavy, have a coffee and snack at the cafe.

Cost:  This is a free event.

Equipment suggestions: Bring the longest telephoto lens that you have.  All of the images above were taken by me from shore at the same location where we will be meeting. I used an[masked]mm lens and most shots were taken at 400 mm, however, I am shooting with a full frame camera so if you are using a DX camera than a 300mm lens would give you about the same amount of zoom.

Please RSVP:  If you are planning to attend, please enter a Yes RSVP so I know how many people to expect. One of the big problems we have are people who RSVP and than don't show up.  If your plans change, be sure to change your RSVP to No.

Great day. Thanks for arranging Edward. I did manage to put my tripod down a few feet to your right. Too crowded to get to you to say Hi. I uploaded some photos to the group, and more, including video on Flickr http://www.flickr.com...

Too bad I couldn't find you guys....sooo many people :)
Still, thanks for the idea and tips for the good location, Ed.

I was blessed by the "parking gods" and got a good spot in the Crissy Fields lot, closest to the Peach Hut...even after I got there at 11.

Ok, back to doing more post-editing from today's shots :)

Are meeting *in* the GG Yacht Club or at the adjacent *Public* viewing area? This past Sunday I was in the Public area taking some captures - the 'cats' are amazing to see when going full speed

Actually a long way from Fort Mason - east of grandstand between the yacht clubs. The map has a big red X where I was.

I was further down at the end of 'jetty' - I asked a few shutterbugs if they were part of the Meetup but none was - oh well next time - looks like everyone got some great captures

Hi Ed I'm here at the concrete platform left of the grandstand area. Any location suggesting? Where will you be?

I think I will stay at my current location near the unpaid grandstand area opposite side of you quys are. May even be closer to the action. Or maybe not. We will see.

I have photographed this event several times both this year and last year. I usually photograph from Fort Mason. Its less crowded there. But since there the renovations going on space is limited. I will join your and try the Yacht Club for the final race and hopefully I won't be scrambling for a spot.

    September 13, 2013

    • Edward W.

There are many places to shoot the races. I feel that the location I have selected is the best because you get the start of the race so this is where the most drama is.
