http://www.carmelcalifornia.com

Dates: Saturday, January 18, 2014 from 9:00 am to Monday, January 20, 2014 at 6:00 pm

Please note that Monday is a holiday for many.

Hotel: We have reserved rooms at an outstanding hotel in Carmel.  The Hofsas House Hotel  brings European Charm and Hospitality to guests as well as being conveniently located. Here is a link to their website:

http://www.hofsashouse.com

The Big Sur area of California is a magnificent combination of land and sea with an amazing range of subjects to photograph including:

•  Spectacular Big Sur Coastal Locations and Parks.

•  Birds and Wildlife including California Condors - North America's Largest Bird

•  Magnificent Redwood Groves and Wildflowers

•  Optional lunch and dinners at unique restaurants.

Special Feature in this Workshop: The first 2 photos show the Big Sur Sunset Portal effect which happens when the sun is far enough south to shine through the window in the arch at Pfeiffer Beach. It generally is most visible between late November and late January when there is a clear or slightly cloudy southwestern horizon.

About Your Instructor: Master photographer and photographic craftsman Seraphina Landgrebe holds a Master of Arts degree in photography from San Francisco State University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of California.

She is an internationally acclaimed photographer, portrait artist and educator who has taught photography world wide.  Her classical and romantic style has won her the hearts of photographers around the world.  She was awarded "Photographer of the Year" for 9 consecutive years by the Professional Photographers of the Monterey Bay Area.

She has studied with Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham and Bret Weston.

Since opening her studio in Santa Cruz, she has been rewarded with honors and awards from both her local and national photographic associations.

Her best know work "Guardian of the Spheres" has been accepted into the permanent collection at the International Photography Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City.

Numerous images of hers have been included in the Professional Photographers of America's ASP traveling loan collection, the PPA loan collection at Disney World's Epcot Center and the Photokina Photography Show of Shows in Cologne, Germany.  She as also been honored with three Fuji Masterpiece Awards.

You can see more of Seraphina's work on her website - here is a link to it:

http://www.seraphina.com/

About This workshop: It will feature intensive photographic training and shooting in which Seraphina will work personally with each attending photographer to be sure that everyone is able to create many memorable images.

Seraphina is a long time resident of Santa Cruz and has spent a lot of time exploring the spectacular Big Sur coast and she will share many of her favorite and very special shooting locations with us.

On Saturday morning, we will begin our adventure to Big Sur where we will experience dramatic meetings of land and sea including beautiful beaches and coastal rock formations, special locations where California Condors and other wildlife are frequently seen, redwoods and wildflowers and much more. There will be a moon shoot on Saturday night.

We will be visiting Seraphina's secret places for shooting the extremely rare California Condors.

What Seraphina Will Teach You: This workshop will help beginning and intermediate photographers create wonderful images of the beautifully unique Big Sur coast. The workshop focuses on producing striking and powerful compositions, as well as telling a story with your photos. There is also a strong emphasis on understanding your camera's settings in order to break into new creative realms. We will discuss:

• Transforming your artistic vision into memorable photographs
• Camera Settings: Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO - their relationship to one another and how to change them for exposure control
• Metering and getting a correct exposure
• Histograms, how to read them, and how to fine-tune exposure
• Creative depth-of-field effects using aperture control
• Capturing motion within your photos using different shutter speeds
• Timing waves to capture crashing spray, water streaks, and sandy reflections
• White balance and creative coloration
• Creating perspective, depth, and a sense of "being there" in your photos
• Creating powerful compositions with impact
• Composing to control your viewer's attention in your photos
• Compositional balance, tension, and visual flow
• How to use filters to capture dramatic light or create long-exposure effects

Seraphina is a wonderful teacher and you will really learn a lot during this workshop.

Car Pooling: We will be setting up a car pool location in San Jose for Saturday morning. If you are interested in car pooling, when you make your reservation, be sure to tell us if you can drive or if you would like to be a passenger.  (The number of passenger spaces available will depend on the number of people who can drive).

Room Share: For those who want to share a room, we will try to put people together for that.

Seraphina is the primary instructor but Greg and I will be assistant instructors so there will be plenty of help for everyone who needs it.

Workshop fee: $195.00 (not including travel, meals, park entry fees or hotel rooms).

Seraphina and I hope that you join us for this remarkable workshop.

hi everyone. thanks so much for posting these. I love looking at what you got from where you were. they are all very nice.

some great ones there Erica. You got the humming bird you were working on.

Now I have had a chance to look at some of my images and am happy with some of them I got. and I think some will look great with some work. Just let me know how to post. What a beautiful place.

Thanks to Seraphina for all the hard work and to Ed for his organizing of this meeting and all the others he has done. How about a trip to Mono Lake and Bodie? I have found out that you can, as Photographers, arrange to photo at night at Bodie (for a price). And at Mono I can take you all out to the Castle Tufa towers which most people do not know about.

John - to upload some photos just click on the "upload" icon and it will take you there.

      January 23, 2014

    • John D.

Yes, I found that but they were too big so I have to re-size them.

      January 23, 2014

  • John D.

We had great weather and beautiful places to photograph. There was some confusion about carpooling and where we where all supposed to go. Some people got separated from the group, by mistake or intentionally. I think the size was too large to really have a cohesive control and to be able to give instruction to those who needed it.
I would have liked to go to McWay Falls at Sunset. Mid-day was not good for the light.
I have not had much time to look at or work on my images. When I do, where to I go to post some of them?
It was great to meet all of you and learn from many different sources.
    Thanks to Ed and Sarafina.

It was great to meet everyone and I really enjoyed being in a group of photographers so willing to share their knowledge. We saw a lot of beautiful scenery and explored places I would never have found by myself. I also appreciated all the advice Ed and Seraphina provided me. I did learn a lot because I stayed close to them most of the time, continuously asking questions and leveraging their expertise. Overall, I enjoyed the weekend and thought it was time and money well spent.

I had a lovely time meeting everyone, but the group was MUCH larger than we were made aware of. In talking with other attendees, having the photography lectures at the beginning at the hotel would have been optimal - this way we could take notes & not feel rushed to get the shots in. Also, this would allow the more advanced photographers to be out taking photos; rather than using precious time at the site (beach or state park) for the lecture.

I appreciate all the tips & advice from Ed and Seraphina. You picked a lot of great spots for taking photos. I definitely would love to do this again but with a much smaller group. Thank you for your efforts, I know it wasn't easy herding everyone throughout the weekend.

The positives- It was great meeting and shooting with members of both meetups and we couldn't have asked for better weather. My goals to shoot many great locations and become familiar with the area were reached, but much done on independent time.
The negatives- Posted details were vague at the beginning and assumptions were made by both organizers and attendees that proved to be incorrect. Larger group than posted, poor driving directions, lectures geared for beginners and precious shooting time lost for those with more advanced skills. I appreciate the efforts made by leaders and organizers but believe Big Sur workshops require more planning than was evident. Coming from So Cal required more time, effort and money for us to attend- but I'm still glad I did.

I had a good time at the workshop and enjoyed it. The weather was wonderful and suitable for making the most of the workshop. The instructions from Seraphia were useful. Seraphina, Ed and Greg all were very approachable for my questions and queries. Got some good suggestions and inputs for improvement based on some of the work I showed them. I agree that there were some hiccups due to the accident but all three tried their best so we could be on track. It was nice meeting everyone and overall a good workshop. Thanks Seraphina, Ed and Greg. I will upload my pictures at the earliest.

damn, I just wrote a lot and it didn't post……..ditto Debra, thanks for your honesty Mike. I had a good time but I have developed a good go with the flow attitude to group trips and I am used to meet ups with an organizer where your kind of on your own and responsible for meeting your own needs, but this one was more expensive because there was a professional photographer as well. The group was too large for effective field training and folks seemed to have very different wants and needs. Everyone seemed great as individuals but the "cat" herding, expectations and unexpected events did get in the way……. but it was a beautiful weekend, I haven't looked at my pics yet but I'm sure I got some great ones, will post a few later.

    hi

    January 21, 2014

  • Debra E.

I had a good time, the weather was great. The area is difficult to shoot sometimes because places aren't marked well and are difficult to find. I think a smaller group might work better with caravanning.

  • Edward W.

Wonderful weather for a workshop in Big Sur in January. Normally the weather is colder with much more fog but not this year. There were so many areas in which to shoot and I saw a lot of great images from many who attended.

    January 21, 2014

  • Greg E.

    Folks

I missed the sunset portal in the fog. I have photographed the portal about a dozen times but not in the fog. In an effort to better understand how it works, could someone post to here or dropbox a series of the portal in the fog from before the effect works until after it is over with timestamps?

    Thank you

    Greg

My wife and I have been attended over 15 other Photography workshops by 4 different vendors. On this workshop, Seraphina was our Instructor and Ed Woods was our Organizer. When we signed up we were told that they limited the student attendee's to 12. When we arrived to our surprise there were 21, there was another group from LA that also attended. Seraphina did bring another guy who was a second instructor (Greg) who was very knowledgeable, however you must go ask either of them questions. They never came around and asked how we were doing, or if we were having issues. There is no way 1 Instructor or even 2 can instruct/teach 21 students. Especially when all the instructors were off taking their own photographs. Each day Seraphina would give some handouts/Instruction on what we were suppose to photograph. The students were then sent out to photograph, whether a Mission, Carmel Cityscape, a Barn/Big Sur, without the Instructor, however you were with 3-4 other students?

Mike - I didn't directly work with you and Jill because you seemed to know what you were doing and didn't seem to need help. I would have been happy to if you had asked. I don't like to intrude. Greg, unpaid assistant asked by Ed to help out.

      January 21, 2014

  • Edward W.

We had fabulous weather for the Big Sur Workshop. Normally the weather in January is cold and usually foggy but not this year. As a result, we had a lot of more photographers who wanted to attend. In other take the extra people, we asked Greg to attend and act as an Assistant Instructor so there were 3 of us available to help. One the problems with the Big Sur area is that there is no cell phone service in the area so when some of the photographers leave the group, it is very hard to find them to answer questions and provide help - even with 3 instructors. Still the wonderful weather was the real star and I saw a lot of outstanding images created by many who attended.

Looking forward to the workshop there. I was just there a month ago and it was not enough time.
Are there any arrangements being made for us to be in any of the parks for Sunset? I know a lot of them close before sunset and do not open until after sunrise so we don't get a chance for those magic hours.
