CHINESE NEW YEAR'S PARADE ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 15

2014 CHINESE NEW YEAR'S PARADE

Named one of the top ten parades in the world, the annual Chinese New Year's Parade is one of the few remaining Night illuminated parades in the world.

Nowhere will you see a lunar new year parade with more gorgeous floats, elaborate costumes, ferocious lions, exploding firecrackers, and of course the newly crowned Miss Chinatown U.S.A. and her court. A crowd favorite is the spectacular 250 foot Golden Dragon ("Gum Lung"). It takes a team of over 100 men and women from the martial arts group, White Crane, to carry this dragon throughout the streets of San Francisco.

Date: Saturday, February 15, 2014

Time:  We will start meeting at 4:00 pm although you can come earlier or later.  The official starting time is 5:15 pm, however, they are usually late. There is always a really big crowd for this parade which is why I have suggested arriving early to get a spot.

Location: The North East corner of Geary and Powell streets in Union Square.

Cost: This is a free event.

If you are planning to join us, please enter a Yes RSVP so we know who is coming.  If your plans change be sure to update your RSVP.

PLEASE NOTE: This parade is an extremely popular event and draws a very large crowd.  As a result, if you want to join us, you need to be sure to arrive at the meeting point before 4:00 pm.  After that time, you may not be able to find us. People tend to move around to find a location from which to shoot. If you are not able to find our group, don't get upset - just take a lot of great photos and share them with us.

Viewing Stand: There are seats that can be purchased in the viewing stand but there is a fee involved to do that.  However, you will get some great shots.

RSVP:  If you are planning to attend this event, enter a Yes RSVP because we will be sending out email updates only to those who have entered an RSVP.

How lucky we were - the rain held off and the weather was beautiful - perfect for one of the great parades in San Francisco. I saw some of you at the corner of Powell and Geary - I was there shooting away, however it was extremely crowded. The estimate was that over one million people attended. I hope that everyone was able to take a lot of wonderful images of this colorful event and that you will be able to post some of them to the photo gallery.

Sorry I missed you guys. Wound up missing my train and got there too late to catch up with you. I'll post some of the images I did capture later.

For those planning to take the Muni train, Powell station is closed due to a fatal accident . Bart is unaffected. http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=resources/traffic&id=9433696

Weather alert - just want to let everyone know that we might get rain for the parade. I suggest that you check the weather forecast on Saturday morning to see what to expect. If rain is forecast, be sure to bring an umbrella and protection for your camera. Most camera stores sell low cost rain covers that will protect your camera. The parade is always held regardless of the weather.

Edward, what is the best lenses to use in this event?
I have 14-24, 24-70 and I don't want to changing lenses during the performance. Thanks

    • Ted

I would guess 24-70, that gives you wild angle and portrait shot

Edward: I've heard that anyone with a camera in Union square might get nabbed by the cops. Can you verify if that's true? I have no problem taking pictures down closer to market if that's the only option, I am just curious?

    February 10, 2014

    • Edward W.

I have never hear of this - who told you that? There will be thousands of people with cameras.

Can I carpool with anyone from Southbay? I am at San jose state and will be off work at 2 on campus. I will help out with gas!

For last year, how easy was it to shoot the parade during night? Was it lit pretty well? It does look like the photos from last year's turned out okay, but figured there must be some difficulty doing night shots with lots of movement going around

    February 1, 2014

    • Edward W.

The location that we have selected is Union Square. The TV station has big lights in that area to do the TV show so it is very well lite but also crowded. If you are serious, you can buy a ticket in the bleachers for $38 and you will get lots of clear shots. In other areas, you can still get good shots but it is more difficult although most floats have lights.
