Every year in the month of February, a unique visual event occurs when the setting sun lights up the East side of El Capitan.  When conditions are right, Horsetail falls reflects a bright orange to red color.  This occurance was made famous by photographer Galen Rowell in his amazing photograph. The images shown above were taken at workshops in 2008 and 2011.

You can see more photos of this event by doing a Google search for "Horsetail Fall in Yosemite".

In addition to Horsetail, Seraphina will be taking us to photograph several other waterfalls and landscape locations including Yosemite Falls - the highest waterfall in North America.

• Learn how to photograph Winter Snow Scenes.

• Find the right Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO settings to create special effects.

• Use slow shutter speeds and ISO settings to produce dreamy images.

• Learn techniques to use to correctly meter to get proper exposure.

• Discover compositional elements that will add impact to your images.

• Work with filters to enhance your images.

• Benefit from working with visionary photographer and instructor Seraphina to develop your artistic vision.

This workshop will include 3 late afternoon opportunities in which to capture the Horsetail event - Sunsets on Friday, February 15, Saturday, February 16 and Sunday, February 17. If you are not able to leave at 7:30 am on Friday morning, you can drive up on Friday night or early Saturday morning and join the group at the hotel.

In order to conduct these workshops, we have to purchase a permit to hold them in the park and that permit limits the number of photographers in the group to a maximum of 15 which includes the instructor and organizer so we will be limited to a maximum of 14 participants.

Cost: The price for the workshop is $195.00 not including your motel room, transportation or park entry.  We will be organizing car pools to save on gas.

Please Note: When you enter your RSVP for this event, you will be asked to answer a few questions.  It is very important that you send the answers since we need this information to be able to run the workshop.

Weather Conditions: The current forecast is for Sunny on Friday, Partly Cloudy on Saturday and Sunny on Sunday.  High temperatures in the mid 40's during the day and a low of 12 degrees at night.  We will be doing the Horsetails falls shoots until Sunset and will not be doing any organized events at night.

Workshop Schedule:  On Friday, we are leaving early so that we arrive in Yosemite in time to do the first Horsetail Falls shoot.  On Saturday morning and early afternoon, we will be shooting some of the other famous Yosemite waterfalls. On Sunday, we will again visit some waterfalls as well as other beautiful locations before completing the trip with a final Horsetail Falls shoot. It should be another amazing trip.

Thanks to Ed and Seraphina and all the attendees for an enjoyable weekend. It was nice meeting you all and sharing our enthusiasm for landscape work. I especially liked the way we could do our own thing during the day and then share dinner and experiences in the evening. I was fortunate enough to be able to stay on a few days after the official meetup and experienced the snow "storm" on Tuesday which, although it didn't leave much snow, coated trees and rocks with a nice dusting and froze the edges of the river into beautiful shapes and patterns. I just returned Friday and hope to have my images posted this wknd.

Seraphina did an excellent job and I appreciated her input and knowledge! The location was great...What's not to like at Yosmite?

Although there was not much water, we did get good color on all 3 days. Weather was very warm - almost like summer which was very pleasant.

A very educational and enjoyable workshop. Seraphina is a great educator and taught us the many elements of making award-winning photographs.

I guess we all got the itinerary. Don't know whether its a good idea, but would anybody be interested in venturing out in the cold of the night ?

Hi Ed, do we really need snow chains? Looks like the weather is going to be quite warm and none of stores gives full refund for snow chains even they are not used...

    • Edward W.

The choice is up to you. We recommended that you buy and carry chains but that is up to you. Here is a link to the Yosemite website about chains:

Do I need any special filters for this workshop?

    February 8, 2013

    • Edward W.

While you do not absolutely need filters, a polarizer and/or neutral density filter would be recommended especially a polarizer.

Hi Ed, we'll be heading back to Bay Area on Sunday night, right?

I won't be able to join the workshop, but your event coincides with the opening reception for the Yosemite Renaissance Festival show, and it features work from the park by a number of fine photographers and other artists. Drop by! :-)
